Protected Areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK )

Introduction to Protected Areas Definition: Protected Areas : Designated regions safeguarded due to their significant natural or cultural values , where human activities and resource exploitation are restricted . Global Statistics on Protected Areas: As of 2016, over 161,000 protected areas cover approximately 17 % of the world's land surface

Introduction to Protected Areas Marine Protected Areas (MPAs): 14,688 MPAs exist, covering about 10.2 % of coastal and marine areas and 4.12 % of global ocean areas. The 30 by 30 Initiative: Goal : Protect 30% of Earth's land and ocean areas by 2030. Adopted by over 100 countries, including the European Union In December 2022 , the Framework incorporated this target. Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity

Introduction to Protected Areas Importance of Protected Areas: Crucial for biodiversity conservation, providing habitats and safeguarding endangered species . Help maintain essential ecological processes threatened by intensive land and sea use. Challenges and Criticisms: Some indigenous communities criticize " fortress conservation " for enforcing regulations that may lead to displacement and cultural disruption. Recent studies indicate that biodiversity is declining faster within protected areas than outside, highlighting the need for effective management and enforcement.

Introduction to Protected Areas Recent Developments: Chile is preparing a conservation bond to ensure long-term environmental protection, aligning with the 30 by 30 goals. Despite commitments, only 17.6% of land and 8.4 % of oceans are currently protected, indicating the need for accelerated efforts to meet the 30 by 30 targets.

Importance of Wildlife Conservation: Protecting Biodiversity Definition: Wildlife conservation involves: safeguarding wild species and their habitats to maintain healthy populations and restore natural ecosystems Major Threats: Habitat Issues: Destruction, degradation , and fragmentation of natural environments. Exploitation: Overuse of wildlife resources and poaching . Environmental Changes: Pollution and climate change . Illegal Activities: Unlawful wildlife trade

Wildlife Conservation: Protecting Biodiversity Conservation Status: IUCN estimates that over 42,100 assessed species are at risk of extinction. A 2019 United Nations report suggests this number could be as high as one million when considering all species. Conservation Efforts: International Agreements: CITES (1973): Regulates international trade of endangered species to prevent threats to their survival. CBD (1992): Aims to conserve biological diversity, promote sustainable use, and ensure fair sharing of benefits from genetic resources. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Organizations like The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund , and Conservation International actively engage in conservation projects and advocacy.

Wildlife Conservation: Protecting Biodiversity Challenges: While protected areas are essential for conservation , their enforcement can sometimes lead to conflicts with indigenous peoples and local communities due to restrictive regulations. Effective wildlife conservation requires collaborative efforts from governments , NGOs , and local communities to address threats and promote sustainable coexistence with nature Sources

Role of Protected Areas in Biodiversity Conservation Protected areas (PAs) are designated regions established to: conserve biodiversity by safeguarding ecosystems and species from human-induced threats. They serve as critical tools in maintaining ecological balance and ensuring the survival of diverse life forms.

Role of Protected Areas in Biodiversity Conservation Habitat Protection and Restoration: PAs provide secure habitats for wildlife, preventing habitat destruction, fragmentation, and degradation. This protection ensures the survival of species by mitigating deforestation and over-exploitation of resources . Climate Change Mitigation: By preserving carbon-rich ecosystems such as forests and wetlands , PAs play a vital role in sequestering carbon dioxide, thereby aiding in climate change mitigation .

Role of Protected Areas in Biodiversity Preservation Reduction of Human-Induced Threats: Effective management of PAs can significantly diminish human pressures like poaching , pollution , and overfishing , which are primary threats to biodiversity. Support for Local Livelihoods: PAs can offer sustainable economic opportunities for local communities through eco-tourism and sustainable resource management, aligning conservation efforts with socio-economic development

National Parks Game Reserves Wildlife sanctuaries The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Biosphere reserve Community control hunting areas (CCHA) Types of Protected areas in Pakistan

Types of Protected areas in Pakistan 1.National Parks: Definition & Purpose: National parks are protected areas established by governments to conserve regions of exceptional natural beauty, historical significance , or cultural value. These areas are maintained in their natural or semi-natural state to preserve 'wild nature ' for future generations and to instill national pride. Public access is typically encouraged to promote education and recreation .

Types of Protected areas in Pakistan Historical Context: The concept of national parks began with the establishment of Yellowstone National Park in the United States in 1872 , recognized as the world's first national park. This initiative set a precedent for the global movement to protect natural areas.

Types of Protected areas in Pakistan Notable Examples: The largest national park adhering to the IUCN definition is Northeast Greenland National Park, established in 1974 , encompassing approximately 972,000 km²

Types of Protected areas in Pakistan 2. Game Reserves: Definition : Game reserves, or game parks, are extensive areas designated for the controlled hunting of wild animals for sport . Unlike nature reserves, which focus on protecting all native biota, game reserves primarily emphasize the management and conservation of animal species. Conservation Role : While hunting is regulated , game reserves play a crucial role in protecting ecosystems and promoting biodiversity. By maintaining natural habitats , they support the growth and sustainability of indigenous wildlife populations.

Types of Protected areas in Pakistan 3. Wildlife sanctuary , is a protected area designated for the conservation of flora , fauna , and geological features . These reserves are managed to preserve biodiversity and provide opportunities for research and education . They can be established by governments or private entities such as charities and research institutions. Typically, nature reserves offer stricter protection than nature parks. History: The first modern nature reserve was created in 1821 by naturalist Charles Waterton in Walton Hall, West Yorkshire , England. He invested in enclosing his estate to protect it from poachers and encouraged birdlife by planting trees and creating habitats . Global Perspective:

Types of Protected areas in Pakistan 4. The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Introduction: The Ramsar Convention, established in 1971 in Ramsar , Iran , international treaty dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. Key Objectives: Promote the conservation and wise use of all wetlands . Designate wetlands of international importance, known as Ramsar sites. Encourage international cooperation on transboundary wetland ecosystems. World Wetlands Day: Celebrated annually on February 2 nd
