Henri Fayol Administrative Management Pioneer ------------------------------ Architect of Modern Management Theory William Li BOH4M Dan December 27

Born on July 29, 841, in Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey), he grew up in a French middle-class family and received a strong education in math and science. In 1860, at the age of 19, he finished school at the National College of Mining and Metallurgy, studying mining engineering. After joining the Compagnie de Commentry, he quickly moved up with new ideas for managing resources and became the company's general manager in 1888, saving it from almost going out of business. He retired in 1918 and spent his later years working on his ideas. In 1916, he wrote the well-known book Industry and General Management. He died in Paris in 1925, leaving a big impact on the field of management. "Legacy of a Pioneering Management Innovator"

Rapid growth of cities and industries. Rise of worker unions asking for better wages and working conditions. Education systems growing, leading to a more educated workforce. Social Background Era Background Political Context Change from Napoleon III's rule to the Third Republic, with political instability and slow progress toward democracy. Increasing influence of socialist and anarchist ideas, pushing businesses to chang Economic Background Advances in steel, electricity, and chemicals during the Second Industrial Revolution. Illustration: Timeline of important events from 1840 to 1920 to show the background of Fayol’s life.

Five Functions of Management Planning: Setting goals and deciding how to reach them. Organizing: Assigning resources and arranging the organization. Commanding (Leading): Leading teams to reach goals. Coordinating: Making sure departments work well together. Controlling: Checking progress and making changes when needed. Fourteen Principles of Management Division of Work Authority and Responsibility Discipline Unity of Command Unity of Direction Putting Company Interests Above Individual Interests Pay Centralization Chain of Command Order Fairness Job Security Initiative Team Spirit Why These Theories Matter: Fayol’s ideas gave the first complete method for managing, working alongside Taylor’s focus on improving efficiency in operations.

Key Events in Fayol’s Life Fayol made important contributions throughout his career, starting with a new method to improve coal extraction and increase productivity. He took control of Compagnie de Commentry during a financial crisis and used planning and changes to make the company successful. In his later years, Fayol shared his ideas at professional meetings, influencing people like Max Weber and Chester Barnard. During retirement, he focused on writing and guiding others, leaving a lasting impact on management practices.

Industrial Advancements Use of electricity in factories, improving productivity. Development of railroads, allowing faster distribution. Political and Economic Changes Growth of worker unions like the Conf é d é ration G é n é rale du Travail in France. Push for laws on working hours, safety, and child labor. Economic downturns in the 1870s and 1890s forced companies to find new ways to work. Rise of state capitalism in countries like France, where the government worked with private businesses. Social Movements

Fayol’s management ideas have been used in many fields. In mining, he set up a clear reporting system to reduce communication delays and focused on using resources efficiently. Today, companies like Toyota still use Fayol’s ideas of planning and coordination in lean manufacturing. In the tech industry, companies like Google apply his focus on initiative to encourage new ideas and innovation. These examples show how Fayol’s theories have been adapted and are still useful today. Management Theory Examples

Verification Effectiveness of Theories: Proved helpful in stabilizing large organizations. The framework is still an important part of MBA programs. Impact on Modern Management: Influenced strategic planning, HR policies, and how operations are designed. Personal Perspective: I agree with his organized approach, but it needs updates for faster work environments. I recommend using AI to improve planning and control.

Today, Fayol’s ideas can be used with modern practices, like combining his methods with agile ways to manage changing projects and using data to make better decisions. Problems like cultural differences in global teams can be solved by applying his ideas of fairness and coordination. For example, a multinational company improved its supply chain by using Fayol’s planning and organizing methods. These examples show that his theories are still useful in today’s management world. Application in Today’s Management Climate

Summary Fayol’s ideas offer valuable lessons, but they need to change to stay useful today. By combining old principles with new technologies, we can find new opportunities for growth. Fayol’s legacy teaches us that organized thinking is important for solving difficult problems, no matter the time. His ideas continue to inspire management practices and help us adapt to future challenges.
