INNOVATION PROJECT
Homogenous Mixture: DIY Emerald Sparkle Power
S.Y. 2024 - 2025
Comfort room hygiene is important for school children as it prevents
the spread of germs, bacteria, and infectious diseases like colds, flu, and
stomach illnesses by controlling pathogen transmission from toilets and
contaminated surfaces. According to American Journal of Infection Control
(Madison P. Goforth et al., January, 2024), closing the toilet lid before
flushing doesn’t significantly reduce the spread of viral particles. However,
using a disinfectant and brush to clean the toilet bowl reduced viral
contamination by more than 99.99%. The researchers concluded that
regular disinfection of toilets is crucial in reducing contamination and
preventing the spread of viruses. In addition, in the study published by ERIC
(Educational Resources Information Center), Moyasar Yahya et al., cited that
automatic toilet bowl cleaners containing surfactant materials significantly
reduced microbial aerosols.
On the contrary, DepEd Order No. 2016 titled “Policy and Guidelines
for the Comprehensive Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools (WinS)
Program, “published on February 19, 2016. It is designed to defend
children’s rights to dignity, assistance, and protection from circumstances
that would impair their development. It aims to improve the health and
academic performance of Filipino learners by implementing a
comprehensive, scalable, and sustainable school-based WASH program.
To support this initiative, Lambakin Elementary School’s Grade 6 –
Emerald class, under the guidance of Mrs. Emmalyn S. Pengson, developed a
DIY toilet bowl cleaner, Emerald Sparkle Power. This project aims to promote
a deeper understanding of homogeneous mixtures among pupils while
addressing the school’s need for effective and eco-friendly cleaning
solutions.
The Emerald Sparkle Power toilet bowl cleaner effectively removes
tough stains and mineral deposits, leaving toilet bowls clean and hygienic.
The project engages pupils in hands-on learning, promoting their
understanding of scientific principles and community service. It also
