Objectives Identify the different word formation processes

• Compounding

WORD FORMATION Is about creating new words that become part of the language.

COMPOUNDING Is a word formation process where two or more words are put together to form a new word. Closed Compound Open Compound Hyphenated Compound

COMPOUNDING Closed compound words are formed when two fully independent, unique words are combined to create a new word.

Examples bullfrog snowball mailbox grandmother railroad sometimes inside t upstream basketball anybody outside cannot skateboard everything schoolhouse grasshopper sunflower moonlight

COMPOUNDING Open compound words are formed when two words remain separate on the page but are used together to create a new idea with a specific meaning.

Examples peanut butter Boy Scouts ice cream real estate high school living room sweet tooth post office full moon

COMPOUNDING Hyphenated compound words are formed when two separate words are joined together by a hyphen

Examples two-fold check-in merry-go-round father-in-law seventy-two long-term up-to-date mother-in-law one-half over-the-counter

• Clipping

CLIPPING Is a word formation process where a word is reduced or shortened without changing the meaning of the word.

Examples Examination – exam Laboratory- lab Mathematics – math Photograph – photo

• Blending

BLENDING Is a word-formation process where parts of two or more words are blended to form a new word. Often, the meaning of the new word is a combination of the meanings of the two words. Also called “portmanteaus”

Examples Spoon + fork = spork Web + seminar = webinar Breakfast + lunch = brunch

• Coinage

Coinage Is the invention of totally new words.

Examples Cardigan – (a usually collarless sweater or jacket that opens the full length of the center front) The word is from James Thomas Brundenell , 7 th Earl of Cardigan who is said to have worn a knitted waistcoat.

Examples Xerox, Kodak, Watt

• Borrowing

Borrowing Is the formation of words by getting words from other language.

Examples Piano (Italian) Croissant (French)
