World Energy Resources Er . Rujan Timsina Asst. Proff . IOE, TU ,NEPAL

Introduction World energy resources : are sources supplying the energy demand. e.g. Oil, coal, petroleum gas, hydroelectricity, wind , geothermal, solar, tidal, bio-gas etc. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 2

Topics Types 2. Non-renewable Fossil: coal, oil, petroleum gas, 2. Renewable Solar Wind Hydro-electricity Nuclear Geo-thermal 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 3

Distribution of the 0.5% of “Others” 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 5

Fossil fuel fossil fuels are coal, oil, and petroleum gas called so because formed from the fossilized remains of prehistoric plants and animals. They provide around 66% of the world's electrical power, and 95% of the world's total energy demands. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 6

Fossil fuel Advantages: - Very large amounts of electricity can be generated in one place using coal, fairly cheaply. -Transporting oil and gas to the power stations is easy . Disadvantages: - Basically, the main drawback of fossil fuels is pollution - Mining coal can be difficult and dangerous. Strip mining destroys large areas of the landscape 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 7

Renewable sources These sources includes solar , hydropower, wind, nuclear geothermal etc.. Solar: utilization of sun’s energy for heating , producing electricity. Solar panel 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 8

Renewable energy Wind energy : utilization of energy of moving air. used for: to pump water for irrigating crops sailing boats were around to grind corn Nowadays for generation of electricity 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 9

wind Wind turbines 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 10

solar and wind Total energy available from these sources is immense, but the energy density is low Product is largely electricity, the most useful form of energy The C1 scenario projects that these sources, along with biomass for fuels, will be the dominant sources of the future. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 11

Solar and wind Electricity from Solar and Wind Units ( y-scale TWhr . x-scale year) 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 12

Solar and wind Advantages: - energy is free - it needs no fuel and produces no waste or pollution - A good method of supplying energy to remote areas. Disadvantages: - Very expensive to build solar power stations. - Can be unreliable unless climate is favourable . 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 13

Renewable energy Nuclear energy: loss of mass converted to energy obtained from splitting of larger molecules or combing of smaller molecule Heat generated used to boil water and drive turbine to generated electricity Power plant 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 14

Nuclear energy Nuclear fission makes heat>heated water makes steam>steam turns turbines>turbines turn generators>electrical power is sent around the country supply 11% of world energy demand with small fuel and without pollution. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 15

Nuclear energy Advantages: Nuclear power costs about the same as coal, so it's not expensive to make . Does not produce smoke or carbon dioxide, so it does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Disadvantages: -Although not much waste is produced, it is very, very dangerous . -It must be sealed up and buried for many years to allow the radioactivity to die away. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 16

Renewable energy Hydropower: power of moving water utilized generate electricity Hydro-electricity dam 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 17

hydro-electricity Hydro-electricity provides 20% of the world’s electricity.\ Advantages: Once the dam is built the energy is virtually free. No waste or pollution produced. Disadvantages: The dams are very expensive to build. Finding a suitable site can be difficult. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 18

Geo-thermal Hot rocks underground heat water to produce steam . We drill holes down to the hot region, steam comes up, is purified and used to drive turbines, which drive electric generators. Geo-thermal plant: 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 19

geotherma l Advantages: Geothermal energy does not produce any pollution, and does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Disadvantages: The big problem is that there are not many places where you can build a geothermal power station. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 20

Energy resources Due to pollution energy consumption is shifting from fossil to renewable. Due to disaster occurred in japan nuclear power is being delayed or searching for alternatives. In future solar wind and hydropower will be dominating for increment of supply. 6/26/2024 World Energy Sources , BY: RUJAN TIMSINA 21
