1. Write a paragraph about a social issue using a pattern of idea development with appropriate grammatical signals.

Patterns of Idea Development General to Particular – Starts with a broad idea and narrows it down to specific details.
Example: Social media affects many people. In particular, teenagers spend hours on their phones, affecting their mental health.

Patterns of Idea Development Cause and Effect – Shows the reason something happens and its consequences.
Example: Many students struggle with online learning because of internet issues. As a result, their grades drop.

Problem-Solution – Presents a problem and suggests ways to solve it.
Example: Pollution in our community is increasing. One way to address this is by organizing clean-up drives Patterns of Idea Development

Claim and Counterclaim – Presents an argument and an opposing viewpoint.
Example: Some people say social media improves communication. However, others argue that it causes distractions. Patterns of Idea Development

Patterns of Idea Development Persuasion – Tries to convince the reader to agree with a certain opinion.
Example: We should reduce plastic waste to protect the environment. Let’s take action now!

How to Write a Paragraph Using a Pattern of Idea Development. Choose a topic – Pick a social issue you want to discuss (e.g., poverty, climate change, bullying)

Select a pattern of idea development – Decide the best way to present your ideas: General to Particular – Start with a broad idea, then give specific details.
Cause and Effect – Explain the reason and its result.
Problem-Solution – Present a problem and suggest solutions.
Claim and Counterclaim – Give an argument and a response to it.
Persuasion – Convince the reader to take action.

Use supporting details – Provide facts, examples, or explanations. End with a strong closing sentence – Summarize the main point or give a final thought.
