5 Finding Your Story 3. Voila! Move it to your “Resume Template” Make a “Master Sheet” Type all of your experiences in chronological order Under each experience, write 3 main things that you did Type in all of your coursework 2. Choose by Relevance From your Master Sheet, pick experiences that match the job description of the job you are applying for Choose experiences that highlight different strengths to show you are well-rounded Prioritize most recent experiences

6 Writing your story: Using Action Words Words that describe tasks, skills, achievements, and responsibilities on your resume. Example: Responsible for making a change in the marketing Transformed the marketing campaign Action words make your sentences Singkat, Padat dan Jelas: Remove duplication of words with same meaning No fluffy sentences (ie. What is “making a change”? “Transform” is more direct) Make your sentence shorter, leaving room for more info Notice the difference?

8 Highlighting Your Impact Most importantly, using strong action words and successfully bringing your story to life should lead to a clear and powerful explanation of your impact. What wouldn’t have happened without you there? To show your impact, you can follow this formula: Spearheaded new marketing initiative that increased customer acquisition by 100% in 1 month Cool action word e.g. spearheaded + the object you e.g. spearheaded + the impact you generated + time frame In other words, Verb + Object + Impact + Time Horizon

10 Polish Finally, after working hard on having the best content on paper, you need to make sure that your resume is well-formatted too. Presentation counts! Here is a checklist: Resume is 1 page long Name is easy to see and stands out Contact information is accurate and professional No emails like [email protected] Resume is appealing and easy to look at Easy to find information by section There is still some white space - it is not an overwhelming amount of text, margins still reasonable Formatting is consistent throughout the resume Including consistent fonts, titles/section headers, alignment, and use of bullet points or styles No grammatical errors or typos throughout the document Ask HR if photo is needed Name the file FirstName_LastName_CV and save it as a .pdf to avoid formatting errors

11 Cover Letter: Do I need one and how do I write one? 1.Opening Greeting + Specify which role you are applying for 2. Why the Company Mention connections, Recent news, Company information 3. Why are You a Good Fit Highlight top 3 strengths (align with “requirements” or “qualifications” of jobs) Include short explanation of how you demonstrated specific strength in a previous Experience and what was the impact. 4. Conclusion Summary + Something interesting about you 5. Closing Statement Thank recruiter for their time. Research! Customize Re-Use Long story short, YES. (Really, only don’t submit one when they explicitly ask you not to.) But, why should you have a cover letter in the first place?

12 Cover Letter: Formatting Can be in separate file (i.e. word docs) or email body Use a professional font e.g. Times New Roman (NOT Comic Sans) Use font size 10pt minimum Make sure there is still white space - standard margins (1 inch), single-spaced between lines, clear paragraph breaks 1 page maximum You can bold your top 3 strengths Name the file FirstName_LastName_Cover_Letter and save it as a .doc or .pdf Company and date Greeting Opening paragraph Middle paragraphs (why you’re a good fit!) Closing paragraph (quick summary) Complimentary close and signature
