Basic concepts in clinical toxicology Acute poisoning is encountered only in poison control center. Acute poisoning is common medical emergency and acute poisoning cases can be encountered in any hospital , clinic and even at home. First aid management of the poisoned patient needs clinical toxicologist. Acute poisoning is a medical emergency. First aid management should be provided by the ER physician. The causative agent should be known (or diagnosed ) to start the first aid management. First aid management should be provided before starting the diagnostic workup except in certain cases (will be discussed during the course ).

Basic concepts in clinical toxicology Acute poisoning = Death. Acute poisoning a medical emergency that can be managed and treated. Most cases of acute poisoning are manageable and curable. Deaths occurs only in certain circumstances. 5. Antidote is needed in all cases of acute poisoning. Antidote in needed only in certain cases of acute poisoning. 6. The managing physician is legally responsible for death of the poisoned patient. The managing physician has only medical responsibility. 7. Empirical interference is allowed as life saving measure. Empirical interference is completely prohibited. It may be a leading cause of death.
