Introduction Xen is a hypervisor that enables the simultaneous creation, execution and management of multiple virtual machines on one physical computer. Xen was developed by Xen Source , which was purchased by Citrix Systems in 2007. Xen was first released in 2003. It is an open source hypervisor. Xen is based on Para virtualization ; it requires that the guest operating systems be modified to support the Xen operating environment. 2
Features Xen is primarily a bare-metal, type-1 hypervisor that can be directly installed on computer hardware without the need for a host operating system. Because it's a type-1 hypervisor, Xen controls, monitors and manages the hardware, peripheral and I/O resources directly . Guest virtual machines request Xen to provision any resource and must install Xen virtual device drivers to access hardware components . Xen supports multiple instances of the same or different operating systems with native support for most operating systems, including Windows and Linux . Xen work under the GNU( General Public License). 3

Domain-0 – this controls Xen and all the virtual machines added to the machine. D omain-u – these are the virtual machines . Hypervisor Virtual machine environment 5

Advantages/Disadvantages Advantages consolidating servers Cost Performance Management tools Highly efficient Disadvantages It becomes challenging to find reliable hypervisor services for your particular enterprise needs within a budget . Security may become an issue. 8
Comparison Citrix Xen Server Open source Xen Server’s Graphics Support is much more comprehensive than VMware’s. Xen Server is open source and free, and is an extremely powerful hypervisor without buying additional features . Designed to be installed quickly without the need to configure a complex management infrastructure or create a dedicated storage network. VMware Not Open source VMware’s Graphics Support is much more limited than Xen Server’s. Unlike Xen Server , which is free, VMware requires a proprietary license and is licensed per processor . Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. Up to 2GB free disk space to decompress the installation archive. Approximately 1.5GB of these files are deleted after the installation is complete. 9
conclusion Choosing between Xen Server vs VMware really depends on the size and type of business you have and your budget. VMware’s vSphere has a much higher price tag than Xen Server overall, and VSphere licenses do not come with maintenance. Citrix Xen Server is free, with the option to purchase a maintenance plan. Many small to medium sized businesses with tight budgets choose Xen Server vs VMware, which is better suited for much larger enterprises that have a sizable IT staff, and the funds to cover costs. 10
