•atha- now, authority
•yoga- to join, union,
•anushasanam- advice, direction, order, command, instructions, laying down rules and
precepts
With prayers for divine blessings, now begins an exposition of the sacred art of yoga.

Selected Sutras: Sutra 1.2
1.2 yogashchittavrittinirodhah
•yoga- union or integration from the outermost layer to the innermost self
•citta- consciousness, which is made up of three factors: mind (manas), intellect (buddhi)
and ego (ahamkiira). Citta is the vehicle of observation, attention, aims and reason
•vritti- state of mind, fluctuations in mind, course of conduct, behaviour, a state of being,
mode of action, movement, function, operation
•nirrodah- obstruction, stoppage, opposition, annihilation, restraint, control, cessation
Yoga is the cessation of movements in the consciousness.

1.3 tada drashtuh svaroope avasthanam
•tada- then, at that time
•drashtuh- the soul, the seer
•svarupe- in his own, in his state
•avasthanam- rests, abides, dwells, resides, radiates
Then, the seer dwells in his own true splendour.

1.4 vrittisaroopyam itaratra
•vritti- fluctuation, modification
•sarupyam- identification, closeness
•itaratra- at other times, elsewhere
At other times, the seer identifies with the fluctuating consciousness.

1.5 vrittayah pangchatayyah klishta aklishtah
•vrittayah- fluctuations, modification
•pangchatayyah- fivefold
•klishta- afflicting, tormenting, distressing, painful
•aklishtah- untroubling, undisturbing, unafflicting, undistressing, pleasing
The movements of consciousness are fivefold. They may be cognizable or non-cognizable,
painful or non-painful

1.6 pramannaviparyayavikalpanidrasmritayah
•pramanna- Valid knowledge, Experienced knowledge, Correct knowledge which is
studied and verified, Proof, or Evidence
•viparyaya- Inverted, contrary
•vikalpa- doubt, indecision, hesitation, fancy, imagination, or daydreaming
•nidra- sleep, a state of emptiness
•smritayah- memory
They are caused by correct knowledge, illusion, delusion, sleep and memory.

1.7 pratyakshanumanagamah pramanani
•pratyaksha- direct perception
•anumana- inference
•agamah- traditional sacred texts or scriptural references
•pramanani- kinds of proof
Correct knowledge is direct, inferred or proven as factual.

1.8 viparyayo mithyajnanam atadroopapratishtham
•viparyayo- Unreal
•mithyajnanam- Illusory Knowledge
•atadroopa- Not in its own form
•pratishtham- Occupying, Beholding
Illusory or erroneous knowledge is based on non-fact or the non-real.

1.9 shabdajnaananupati vastushoonyo vikalpah
•shabdajnaana- verbal knowledge
•ananupati- followed in sequence, pursued
•vastushoonyo- devoid of things, devoid of substance or meaning
•vikalpah- imagination, fancy
Verbal knowledge devoid of substance is fancy or imagination.

1.10 abhavapratyayalambana vrittirnidra
•abhava- non-existence, a feeling of non-being,
•pratyaya- going towards conviction, trust
•alambana- support, abode, dependence on a prop
•vritti- function, condition, thought-wave
•nidra- sleep without dreams
Sleep is the non-deliberate absence of thought-waves or knowledge.

1.11 anubhuta visay asampramosah smritih
•anubhuta - perceived, apprehended, experienced, knowledge derived from direct
perception, inference and comparison, verbal knowledge
•visaya - an object, a sense of object, an affair, a transaction
•asampramosha - not allowing to slip away, without stealing from anything else
•smritih - memory of a thing experienced, recollection of words or expenences
Memory is the unmodified recollection of words and experiences.

I.12 abhyasa vairagabhyam tannirodhah
•abhyasa - repeated practice
•vairagabhyam - freedom from desires, desires, detachment, renumciation
