Adultery Rules in Islam

2. THE WORD ZINA The word Zina applies both adulterers (where one or both parties are married to a person or persons other than the persons involved in the sexual intercourse).  FORNICATION And the word Fornication where both parties are unmarried.  

3. THE WORD ZINA ZINA IS A SHAMEFUL ACTS Islam consider Zina not only as a great sin but also as an act open the gate for many other shameful acts, which destroy the very basis of the family, which leads to quarrels and murders, which ruins reputations and property and which spreads numerous disease, both physical and spiritual.

4. DO NOT COME NEAR ZINA! Al- Isra 17:32 Allah ( swt ) the Most High says Do not come near Zina , for it is a shameful deed and an evil path.

5. DO NOT COME NEAR ZINA! Al- Furqan 25: 68-70 (The servants of the Most Merciful are, among others) those who do not call upon any other god besides Allah nor kill any person whom Allah has prohibited (killing) except in (the course of) justice, nor commit fornication (or adultery) - and whoever does this shall receive the punishment.

6. THERE IS NO SIN AFTER SHIRK   The Prophet Muhammad ( sas ) said: “There is no sin after Shirk (associations) greater in the eyes of Allah ( swt ) than a drop of semen which a man places in the womb which is not lawful for him. ” ( Sahih Al- Bukhari , Kitb Al- Hudud )  

7. THERE IS NO SIN AFTER SHIRK Abdullah bin Masud reported: I asked the Prophet ( sas ) “ O Allah ’ s Apostle which is the biggest sin? He replied: to set up rivals with Allah ( swt ) by worshiping others though he alone has created you. ”

8. THERE IS NO SIN AFTER SHIRK “ I asked: “ what is next? He said: to commit illegal sexual intercourse with wife of your neighbor . ( Sahih Al- Bukhari , Kitab Al- Hudud )

9. MOST PUNGENT SMELL The Prophet ( sas ) said: The dwellers of Hell will have the punishment of smelling the most pungent smell emanating from the private parts of an adulterer.

10. EIGHTY DOORS OF HELL He is further reported to have said: that if a person commits adultery, Allah ( swt ) will open for him in his grave 80 [eighty] doors of Hell from which will emerge scorpions and snakes to trouble him until the day of resurrection. ( Sahih Al- Bukhari , Kitab Al- Hudud )

11. HAVING A PASSIONATE LOOK Islam abhors adultery and for that end enjoins upon Muslim to keep away from all those satanic things which lead a man to adultery. Prophet Muhammad ( sas ) said: “Even to look at an unknown woman (with a passionate look) is also a sin.

12. THE PUNISHMENT WILL BE DOUBLED   Qur’an 25:69 The punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection and he will abide therein in disgraced; EXCEPT THOSE WHO REPENT   Qur’an 25:70 Except those who repent and believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds; for those, Allah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

13. HUNDRED LASHES Al- Nur 24:2 The male and female who commit fornication - flog each one of them with one hundred lashes, and do not let compassion for the two of them keep you from (complying with) Allah ’ s religion, if you believe in Allah and the last day. And let a group of believers witness their punishment.

14. BY STONING TO DEATH   If a person was ever married before committing the crime of Zina , he or she is to be punished by stoning to death. This is established by the practice of the Prophet ( sas ). If they are not punished in this world and die without repentance, they will be punished in the fire with whips of fire.

15. “ZINA” REFERS TO BOTH FORNICATION”   In Arabic, the single word “ Zina ” refers to both fornication (illicit sexual relations between two unmarried people) and adultery (the same between married partners).

16. FOUR WITNESSES OR SELF CONFESSION Such a severe punishment may be only after four sane adult male eye-witnesses solemnly testify that they have seen the actual act of intercourse, an extremely rare if not impossible situation, or after self confession by either of the two parties involved.

17. WHILE COMMITTING ZINA, STEALING, DRINK WINE AND CHEATING IS NOT A BELIEVER   Abu Hurairah ( raa ) reported Allah ’ s Messenger ( sas ) as saying: A Zina (fornicator or adulterer). While committing Zina , is a not believer thief, while stealing, is not a believer, when one drinks wine, he is not a believer, and one of you cheating he is not a believer, Therefore, beware, beware! ” ( Bukhari & Muslim )

18. HIS FAITH LEAVES HIM, FOR IT IS LIKE A COVERING ABOVE HIS HEAD The Prophet (saws) said: “ When a servant of Allah engages in Zina , his faith leaves him; for it (his faith) is like a covering above his head, and when he leaves off (committing Zina ), faith returns to him. ” ( Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood )  The Pro. ( sas ) also said: “ When someone commits Zina or drinks wine, Allah removes his faith from him, just as a person takes his shirt off over his head. ”

19. THREE TYPES OF PEOPLE ALLAH WILL NOT SPEAK AT THEM   And he ( sas ) said: “ On the day of resurrection, Allah ( swt ) will not speak nor look at them nor purify three (types of) people: 1 An old man who commits Zina , 2 A lying king, 3 And a Vainglorious poor people. There will be a grievous punishment for those. ” (S. Al- Bukhari )

20. A DREAM OF A PROPHET   In a tradition transmitted by Bukhari , on the authority of Samura Ibn Jundab ( raa ), concerning a dream of the Prophet ’ s in which the Prophet (saw) accompanied the Archangels Gabriel and Michael, the Prophet (saws) said:

21. ‘ We went on and arrived near a pit which was like an oven, out of which we could hear cries. We glanced into it and saw naked men and women, who cried out when the flames reached them from below . I asked: “ Who are these, O Gabriel? he replied, Males and females who have committed fornication ” (S. Bukhari )

22. THE HELL IT HAS SEVEN GATES Al- Hijr 15: 44 It has seven gates; to each of these gates, a class (of sinners) is assigned ” THE MOST SEVERE OF THIS GATE “ The most severe of these gates in terms of heat, pain sorrow, and stinking air is the gate for the doers of fornication, who did it (even) after knowing the awfulness of it. ”

23. SATAN SENDS HIS TROOPS ACROSS THE EARTH   The Prophet (saws) said: “ Satan send his troops across the earth with a promise that the one who most misleads a believer will be crowned with a crown, for the greatest mischief makers among them are the dearest to him. Then one of them comes back to him and says:

24. SATAN SENDS HIS TROOPS ACROSS THE EARTH   1, “ I did not leave such- and- such until he divorced his wife ”. Satan says: “ you did nothing: he will marry another! ’

25. SATAN SENDS HIS TROOPS ACROSS THE EARTH   2, Another one approaches him and says: “ I did not leave such-and-such until he and his brother became enemies ” . Satan says: “You did nothing: they will be reconciled!”  

26. SATAN SENDS HIS TROOPS ACROSS THE EARTH   3, Then another one comes to him and says: “ I did not leave such- and such- until he committed Zina . ” Satan says: Well done! ’ Then he seats him by his side and crowns him. ”

27. ZINA HAS SIX CONSEQUENCES   The Prophet ( sas ) said: “ O company of Muslims, fear Zina , because it has six consequences, three in this world and three on the last day. IN THIS WORLD: 1, the light of his face goes away, 2, his life is shortened, 3, and he suffers poverty. ON THE LAST DAY: 1, Allah ( swt ) the Most High will be angry with him, 2, his accounting will be severe, 3, and he will be punished in the fire.

28. HALF THE PUNISHMENT OF THIS UMMAH   The Prophet ( sas ) said: “ If someone commits Zina with a woman who is married, in the grave there will be punishment on him and on her equal to half the punishment of this Ummah .  

29. THE CUCKOLD “And a cuckold is a person who knows about his wife ’ s adultery but says nothing and has no jealousy. ” WILL COUNT IT AS A GOOD DEED FOR HER HUSBAND   On the Day of resurrection, Allah ( swt ) the Most High will count it as a good deed for her husband, in case it was done without his knowledge, while if he knew it and said nothing, Allah ( swt ) will forbid him the Garden. Truly, Allah ( swt ) the Most High has written on the gate of the Garden: (Al- Kaba ’ r)

30. THREE TYPES OF PEOPLE WILL NOT ENTER THE GARDEN   Abdullah bin Umar (r a a ) reported Allah ’ s Messenger (s a s) as saying: Three types of people will not enter the garden: 1, the one who is undutiful to his parents; 2, the Cuckold; 3, and the masculinize woman.

31. HIS PRIVATE PARTS WILL SPEAK AGAINST HIM   If he kissed her, his lips will be cut in the fire, and if he had sexual intercourse with her, his private parts will speak against him on the Day of judgement , saying : I did what was forbidden.

32. HIS HAND TIED TO HIS NECK   The Prophet (saws) also said: “ The man who has laid hand with lust on a woman who is not permissible to him will come on the Day of judgement with his hand tied on his neck.  

33. ALLAH (SWT) LOOKS AT HIM WITH ANGER   Allah ( swt ) most high will look at him with anger, and the flesh on his face will sag ( Lumuyloy ) and he will look haggard ( hapis , pagod ) and old. He will say: ‘ What did I do? ’ His tongue will witness against him, saying, I said what was forbidden: ’ His hand will speak and say, ‘ We reached for what was forbidden;

34. HIS TONGUE WILL WITNESS AGAINST HIM saying, I said what was forbidden: ’ His hand will speak and say, ‘ We reached for what was forbidden;

35. Each of his eyes will speak and say, ‘ I saw what was forbidden ’ Each of his feet will speak and say, I went to a forbidden place; And his private parts will say, I did it;

36. And one guardian angel will say, I heard it, and the other guardian angel will say, I wrote it, and Allah ( swt ) the Most High will say, I knew it but I concealed it. Then He will say: My angels take him and give him a taste of My punishment.

37. THE MOST HEINOUS TYPE OF ZINA The most heinous type of Zina is incest with one ’ s mother or sister or daughter or step-mother, or with any of the permanently prohibited relatives ( Muharim ).  

38. THEIR BODY, BEAR WITNESS AGAINST THEM Al- Nur 24: 24 “ On the day when their tongues and their hands and their feet will bear witness against them concerning what they used to do ”

39. A MAN WHO HAD MARRIED HIS OWN FATHER ’ S WIFE   “Bara ( raa ) reported that the Prophet ( sas ) sent his uncle to a man who had married his own father ’ s wife, ordering the uncle to kill that man and confiscate his property.

40. HOMOSEXUALITY (SODOMY)   In more than one place in His Majestic Book, Allah the Most High has related the story of the people of Lut (Lot). (as) Concerning their destruction,   Hud 11:82-83 He (Allah) says: Then when Our command came to pass, We turned it (their city) upside- down and rained upon it stones of baked clay, heaped layer upon layer, marked by your Lord. And they (the stones of punishment) are never far from the wrong-doers!

41. ALLAH ’ S PUNISHMENT IS NOT FAR OFF   The last warning is for the Muslim Ummah : if they indulge in the practice of homosexuality, Allah ’ s punishment is not far off.

42. ALLAH (SWT) HAS CURSED ANYONE WHO DOES WHAT LUT ’ S PEOPLE DID The Prophet ( sas ) cursed homosexuals by repeating three times: “ Allah has cursed anyone who does what Lut ’ s people did. ”

43. IF YOU FIND ANY PERSONS ENGAGED IN HOMOSEXUALITY   The Prophet ( sas ) said; “If you find any persons engaged in homosexuality , kill both the active and the passive partner. ”  

44. THROW IT IN THE TALLEST BUILDING Ibn Abbas said: “ Find the tallest building in the town and throw the homosexual down from its roof, and then stone him to death. (S. Al- Bukhari ) SUMIPING SA KAPWA LALAKI Leviticos 20:9-21- Kung may lalaking sumiping sa kapwa lalaki gaya ng pagsiping sa babae , nakagawa silang dalawa ng kasuklam-suklam na bagay ; papatayin sila at sila ang mananagot sa kanilang kamatayan .

45. THEY WERE AN EVIL PEOPLE Al- Anbiya 21:74 And (remember) Lot, We gave him Hukman (right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood ) and (religious) knowledge, and We saved him from the town who practised Al- Khabâ'ith (evil, wicked and filthy deeds, etc.). Verily , they were a people given to evil, and were Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient, to Allâh ).  

46. NOT COVERING THE PRIVATE PARTS Ibn Abbas ( raa ) describes several traits related to what the people of Lut used to do. SOME OF THESE ARE: * Not covering the private parts in front of people of the same sex, * whistling with the fingers, * opening the shirt to show the chest, * wearing long trousers which drag on the floor, * and homosexual sex- that is sodomy (or lesbianism).  

47. FOUR TYPES OF PEOPLE AWAKE UNDER ALLAH ’ S ANGER AND GO TO BED UNDER HIS DISPLEASURE “ Abu Hurairah ( raa ) reported Allah ’ s Messenger (saws) as saying: “ four types of people awake under Allah ’ s anger and go to bed under his displeasure. ” Those who were listening asked: “ Who are they, Messenger of Allah? “ He replied:

48. FOUR TYPES OF PEOPLE AWAKE UNDER ALLAH ’ S ANGER AND GO TO BED UNDER HIS DISPLEASURE Who are they, Messenger of Allah? He replied: 1- Men who imitate woman, 2- Woman who imitate men, 3- Those that have sex with animals, 4- and men who have sex with men.

49. THE DEVINE THRONE SHAKES OUT OF FEAR OF ALLAH ’ S WRATH It is said that when a man mounts a man, the Divine Throne shakes out of fear of Allah ’ s Wrath and the Heavens tremble. The angels start reciting, “ Say: He is Allah, the One; Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He does not beget nor He is begotten, and there is none like Him ” (Al Ikhlas 112: 1-4) until his wrath subsides.

50. ALLAH ( SWT ) WILL NOT LOOK ON THE DAY OF RESURRECTION Among those at whom Allah ( swt ) will not look on the day of resurrection, and to whom He will say, “ Enter the fire along with those who enter, “ the Prophet (saws) counted the following: 1- The active and passive partners in homosexuality; 2- The one who has sex with animals, 3- The one who is married to a woman and her daughter at the same time; 4- And the one who masturbates regularly, unless they repent and reform.

51. THE ABOMINATIONS OF LUT ’ S PEOPLE The following are also listed among the abominations of Lut ’ s people: 1 -playing backgammon, 2 -racing pigeons , 3 -holding fights with dogs, 4 -rams or roosters, 5 -entering bathhouses naked; 6 -and cheating with regards to weight and measures. IF A HOMOSEXUAL DIES   Ibn Abbas ( raa ) said: “ If a homosexual dies without repentance, he is changed into a pig in his grave. ”

52. ALLAH (SWT) WILL NOT LOOK AT THEM The Prophet ( sas ) said: “ Allah ( swt ) will not look at a man who has intercourse with a man or with a woman in anus. ”

53. ZINA OF THE EYE, TONGUE, HAND FOOT AND THE EAR A lustful look toward a woman or a boy is Zina , as the Prophet (saws) has said: * The Zina of the eye is the look; * The Zina of the tongue is the speech : * The Zina of the hand is grasping; * The Zina of the foot is walking, * And the Zina of the ear is listening.

54. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AGAINST MIXING SOCIALLY WITH HANDSOME BOYS Some scholars go to the extent of prohibiting a man to be alone with young boy in a house or bathhouse, on the analogy of the prohibition of being in privacy with a strange (non- Mahram ) women. The Prophet (saws) said: When a man is in privacy with a woman, Satan joins them as the third.

55. Now, if there is a beardless youth who is more beautiful than a woman , the temptation from him in privacy may be greater than a woman ’ s, as the evil of homosexuality is definitely much greater than the evil of Zina with a woman.

56. FIFTEEN SATANS PRESENT   Sufyan Thawri once entered a bathhouse and then a handsome boy came in, Sufyan called out: “ Please take him away from me, for if there is one Satan present when one is in privacy with a woman, there are fifteen Satan's present when one is in privacy with a beautiful boy. ” (Al- Kaba’r )

57. A MAN WHO INVITED OTHER MEN TO HAVE ANAL SEX WITH HIM Khalid Bin Walid ( raa ) once wrote to Abu Bakr ( raa ) that in a certain place there was a man who invited other men to have anal sex with him. Abu Bakr ( raa ) consulted with companions of the Prophet (saws) about this.

58. Ali Ibn Abi Talib ( raa ) said: “ this is that sin which none but the people of Lut have done, and Allah the Most High has informed us about how He punished them. ” In my opinion, he should be killed. “So Abu Bakr ( raa ) wrote to Khalid, and Khalid killed him.”

59. JESUS SAW A MAN BEING BURNED BY FIRE   It is reported that on one of his journeys, Jesus saw a man being burned by fire. He took some water to throw at him, but then the fire turned into a boy and the man turned into fire. Jesus was surprised by this and said: “ Lord, return them to the condition they were in this world so that I may ask them about their situation”. “Thereupon Allah ( swt ) revived them and they were a man and a boy.

60. Jesus asked them: “ What is the situation with you? “ The man replied: “O Spirit from Allah , while I was alive, I was passionately in love with this boy and used to have homosexual relations with him”. When I died and the boy died, he became fire, which burns me, then I take a turn, and become fire and burn him. Thus, we alternate, and this is our punishment until the day of resurrection. (Al- Kaba’r )

61. HAVING ANAL INTERCOURSE WITH ONE ’ S WIFE Having anal intercourse with one ’ s wife is a kind of sodomy and it is prohibited by Allah ( swt ) and His Messenger ( sas ). Quran 2:223 Your wives are tillage for you, so go in to your tillage as you will, and send ahead (something good) for your souls. WHETHER IT IS FROM THE FRONT OR THE REAR That is to say, whether it is from the front or the rear (is not important,) as long as intercourse takes place in the vagina, which constitutes the “ tillage. ”

62. THE JEW ’ S CONTRADICT   The Jews of the Prophet ’ s time used to say, “ If a man has intercourse with his wife through the vagina but being on her back, the child, if conceived, will have a squint ( duling o banlag ).  

63. FROM THE FRONT OR THE BACK (IS NOT IMPORTANT)   “The companions asked the Prophet ( sas ) concerning this, whereupon Allah ( swt ) revealed this verse contradicting them (the Jews). The Prophet (saws) told his companions: “ From the front or the back (is not important,) but avoid the anus and intercourse during menstruation. “ He mentioned a single receptacle, meaning the vagina, and that is the tillage. Because the seed of the child is planted in it, while the anus is a place of excrement and that is unclean filth.

64. MENSTRUATING OR IN HER ANUS, IS AN ADHA   Qur ’ an 2:222 They ask you concerning menstruation. Say, that is an Adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have a sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they ’ re purified (from menses and have taken a bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has ordained for you (go in unto them in any manner as long as it is in their vagina).  

65. Abu Hurairah ( raa ) also reported: Allah ’ s Messenger (saw) as saying: “ Anyone who has intercourse with a woman who is menstruating or in her anus, or who goes to a soothsayer, has rejected what had been revealed to Muhammad ( sas ) “ ( Tirmidhi ).

66. “ PURITY OF SEX” Islam commands purity of sex life both for men and women, at all times of their lives. Therefore, punishment for Zina is carried out openly so that it may be a different for other in the society.

67.   THE SHARIAH DOES NOT FAVOR ANY PERSON The Shariah does not favor any person whether a King or a Slave, Rich or Poor, Black or White. Once Zina is proved against him beyond any doubt, punishment will be applied to him regardless of his station in life.

68. PUNISHMENT GIVEN TO UBAID ALA, ALIAS ABI SHAMHA   The second son of Caliph Umar ( raa ) One day he passed by the house of the Jew, Drank wine and got intoxicated. He saw a sleeping woman and committed Zina with her.

69. She became pregnant, when she got a son, she came to the prophet’s Mosque and placed the child in Caliph ’ s Umar ’ s lap ( raa ) and saying: ‘O commander of the faithful, take this child as you have greater right over him than myself. Then the Jew ’ s woman explains that it was the child of Abi Shamhah .

70. “ Caliph Umar ( raa ) asked her whether it was legitimate ”   The lady replied: from my side, it is legitimate but from his side it is illegitimate, then she told the whole story.  

71. “ CALIPH UMAR (RAA) HE FELT VERY MUCH ASHAMED OF IT ”   The Caliph Umar ( raa ) went home and confirmed from his son Abi Shamhah that he had committed the crime although he felt very much ashamed of it. The Caliph caught him by his collar to take him to the Mosque of the Prophet ( sas ); Abi Shamhah asked him where he was taking him.  

72. The Caliph replied that he was taking him to the companions of the Prophet in the Mosque so that it may take from you the right of Allah ( swt ) in this world before it is taken from you in the next world.

73. “ Shamhah requested the Caliph” To take the right of Allah ( swt ) from him then and there so that he may not be put to disgrace in the presence of the companions of the Prophet. “Caliph Umar ( raa ) replied” “O son you have already disgraced yourself and your father . We must go in their presence. Umar ( raa ) ordered Maflah to give him stripes.  

74. When he was given 70 (seventy stripes) Abi Shamhah appealed to the companions of the Prophet to intervene. “The companions requested Umar ( raa ) to stop” Umar replied: “ O companions of the Prophet, have you not read in the Qur ’ an Allah ( swt ) says: Do not show mercy over them.

75. He was given 100 (one hundred stripes)  As a result of which Abi Shamhah died. Then Caliph Umar ( raa ) took him to his house, gave him a bath and buried him. (Al- Kaba’r ) NOTE : It should be noted here that most of the punishment carried out by the Prophet ( sas ) and the four Rashidun Caliphs were based on confession and not the proof.

76. ZINA THE GATE OF SHAMEFUL ACTS   Islam consider Zina not only as a great sin but also as an act which opens the gate for many other shameful acts; which destroy the very basis of the family, which leads to quarrels and murders, which ruins reputation and property and which spreads numerous disease, both physical and spiritual.

77. ZINA THE GATE OF SHAMEFUL ACTS   Qur ’ an:17: 32 And come not near to unlawful sex, Verily, it is a Fahisha (i.e. anything that transgresses its limits: a great sin), and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allah ( swt ) forgives him).

78. Abdullah Bin Masud ( raa ) reported: I asked the Prophet (saws) O Allah ’ s Apostle which is the biggest sin? He replied: To set up rivals with Allah ( swt ) by worshiping others though He alone has created you ” I asked:’ what is next? He said: To kill the child lest it should share your food. “ I asked: ’ what is next? He said: To commit illegal sexual intercourse with the wife of your neighbor .

79. PUNISHMENT OF ZINA, SHOULD BE FOUR WITNESSES   Qur ’ an: 4: 15 And those of your women who commit illegal sexual intercourse take the evidence of four witnesses from amongst you against them, and if they testify, confine them to house until death comes to them or Allah ( swt ) ordains for them some (other) way.  

80. HUNDRED STRIPES Holy Qur ’ an: 24:2 The fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. BE EXILED FOR ONE YEAR Narrated Abu Huraira ( raa ) Allah ’ s Messenger ( sas ) judged that the unmarried person who was guilty of illegal sexual intercourse be exiled for one year and receive the legal punishment (i.e. be flogged with one hundred stripes). (S. Al- Bukhari vol.8 H.no.819)
