About This Presentation

A sieve is a mechanical device or tool used for separating materials based on particle size. It consists of a mesh or perforated surface that allows smaller particles to pass through while retaining larger ones. Sieves are widely used in laboratories, industries, and daily life for grading, filterin...

Sieves Sieves Sieves are essential tools used for separating and classifying materials based on particle size. or A sieve is a device with a mesh or perforated surface used to separate particles of different sizes within a mixture. The process of separation using a sieve is called which is based on the differences in particle sizes. Materials smaller than the mesh openings pass through, while larger particles are retained

TYPES OF SIEVES Woven Wire Sieves It is the most commonly used type in pharmaceutical labs and production. Which is made from wires (typically brass or stainless steel) woven into a square mesh. It is available in different weave types: Plain weave: Straight wires interlaced alternately . Twilled weave: Each wire passes over two and under two successive wires, providing greater strength. Used for precise, analytical sieving of powders and granules due to specific, calibrated mesh apertures.

TYPES OF SIEVES Bolting Cloth Sieves It is constructed from fabric materials such as silk, nylon, or cotton. Which is especially suitable for extremely fine powders due to the uniformity and flexibility of fabric meshes. Nylon bolting cloth sieves are common in pharmaceutical analysis where very small particl e size separation is required.

TYPES OF SIEVES Perforated Plate (Punched Plate) Sieves It is made from sheet metal where holes are punched or drilled (can be round, square, or rectangular ). It is typically used for coarse screening of larger particles. It is less likely to be blocked by irregular materials and provide a robust screening surface .

TYPES OF SIEVES Bar Screens It is consist of parallel bars mounted within a rigid frame . The bars are spaced to allow water or material to pass but retain larger solids . It is suitable for initial screening and removal of large, heavy, or fibrous materials. It is not intended for fine particle separation, mostly used at the preliminary stage .
