The Evolution of Helecopter Rotor Materials
We have most likely seen a few of the early attempts for the actual mechanisms of flight for
helicopters. We have all probably heard of da Vinci’s idea or at least seen designs similar even if
we haven’t connected it to a name. The progress of airplanes especially has been ingrained into
our minds with names like Orville and Wilbur Wright. Less ingrained is the progress of
helicopters with names like Paul Cornu. I would argue even still less talked about but no less
impressive or captivating is the history of a single part of these creations. What is the story of
helicopter rotors? More specifically, how have the materials of these rotors evolved in the last
hundred years and why?
