Concept of Livestock Housing & Shelter Management 1 4_C&BPM

“ Be kind to animals, Unseen they suffer, unheard they cry, in agony they linger, in silence they die, Is it nothing to you? All ye who pass by”. Anonymous. 2 4_C&BPM

The condition of the so-called civilized man is like a trapped man and could be well understood through the following lines: “ The deer fond of music is trapped, the fish fond of taste is caught in net, beetle fond of smell is caught in lotus, moth fond of flame is killed in fire, elephant fond of touch is arrested, Pity the man whom all infested .” ... The provision of housing & shelter allows livestock to better cope with the varying climatic extremes that can occur throughout the year and can increase productivity . 5 4_C&BPM

In broad sense - providing Shelter means – fulfilling the basic needs of livestock What are the basic needs ? Adequate food and Water Quality Air Appropriate Shelter Treatment for various ailments Comfort and The freedom to move and express normal behaviour patterns etc. 6 4_C&BPM

Freedom from Hunger and Malnutrition 7 4_C&BPM

Timely provision for feed, fodder and drinking water 8 4_C&BPM

Feeding in shaded area 9 4_C&BPM

Grazing of animals in pastures 10 4_C&BPM

Right share of housing - no over-crowding 11 4_C&BPM

Housing as per BIS standards 12 4_C&BPM

Feeling of Security 13 4_C&BPM

Freedom from disease, trauma and stress 14 4_C&BPM

Livestock are kept in a variety of situations, ranging from extensive grazing to close confinement and housing. Whatever the form of husbandry, owners and managers have a moral and legal responsibility to care for the welfare of animals under their control. Ensuring prevention of cruelty to animals 15 4_C&BPM

Facets of Livestock Housing & Shelter Requirements 16 4_C&BPM

Livestock Handling Systems- Animal sheds and corrals, yards, and paths Animal sheds and corral designs with curved corners and paths Curved animal handling devices are more efficient for handling animals because they take advantage of the natural behavior Animals move through curved paths more easily because they have a natural tendency to go back to where they came from. Leveled pens/sheds . 17 4_C&BPM

18 A single, lone, agitated animal is very dangerous. Many serious animal handling injuries are caused by a single agitated cow, buffalo, bull or even bucks and rams. Even severe fractures, injuries and deaths have been noticed. Escaped animal must never be chased. An animal which is loose on the plant grounds will return to the stockyard if it is left alone. If an animal gets loose inside the farm/plant, employees should stay quiet while one designated person either stuns it or eases it out a door. Stay out of the blind spot behind a steer's rear end. If he cannot see you, he is likely to kick you. Install a safety fence consisting of upright posts around the cattle shackling area to prevent cattle from entering other parts of the farm/plant. Handling of animals to lower down stress to human beings as well as animals 4_C&BPM

Proper Restraining of Livestock Should be restrained through human ways – dragging, beating, injuries, bruises should be avoided. Restraining through applying force should be avoided. 19 4_C&BPM

Preventing Injuries and Bruises Non-slippery flooring is essential to prevent falls and crippling injuries. NO - Barbed wire fencing Rounded – Smooth Fence Corners Horned cattle will have twice as many bruises as polled (hornless) cattle. 20 4_C&BPM

21 Non slippery flooring for livestock handling Quiet handling of cattle and pigs is impossible if animals slip or fall during handling. Animals tend to panic if they slip even a little bit. If cattle are constantly agitated while standing in a shed, pen or box or restraining device, this is often due to slipping. Ramps must be spaced to fit the width of the animal. This prevents the hoof from slipping. 4_C&BPM

22 Lowering stress to improve meat quality and animal welfare Gentle handling in well-designed facilities will minimize stress levels, improve efficiency and maintain good meat quality. Rough handling or poorly designed equipment is detrimental to both animal welfare and meat quality. Constant management supervision is required to maintain high humane standards. 4_C&BPM

23 Using Animals "Follow the Leader" Instinct Livestock will follow the leader, and handlers need to take advantage of this natural behaviour to move animals easily. Animals will move more easily into the single path if it is allowed to become partially empty before attempting to fill it. A partially empty path provides room to take advantage of following behaviour. Handlers are often reluctant to do this because they are afraid the line will run out. Once a handler learns to use this method, he will find that keeping up with the line will be easier. 4_C&BPM

24 Recommended ritual slaughter practices Ritual slaughter is slaughter done according to the religious requirements of various religious faith/sects. The animal is slaughtered, without being stunned, with a razor sharp knife. When the cut is done correctly, the animal appears not to feel it. From an animal welfare standpoint, the major concern during ritual slaughter are the stressful and cruel methods of restraint (holding) that are used. Progressive slaughter should use devices to hold the animal in a comfortable, upright position. Unfortunately, there are some plants which use cruel methods of restraint such as hanging live animals upside down. The practice of hanging live cattle and calves upside down should be eliminated. 4_C&BPM

4_C&BPM 25 Appropriate livestock housing & shelter must ensure all basic rights to these animals
