Introduction
to Forensic
Science

03

Origin of the
Word FORENSICS-DERIVED FROM THE LATIN
WORD
FORENSIC- MEANING FORUM, A PUBLIC
PLACE USED IN ROMAN TIMES BY
SENATORS TO DEBATE AND HOLD
JUDICIAL PROCEEDINGS

WHAT IS FORENSIC SCIENCE?

Forensic science is the application of natural
sciences to matters of the law.
In practice, forensic science draws upon physics,
chemistry, biology, and other scientific principles
and methods.
It is concerned with the recognition, identification,
individualization, and evaluation of physical
evidence.
Forensic scientists present their findings as expert
witnesses in the court of law. What is forensic science?

Forensic science is an umbrella term encompassing a myriad of
professions that use their skills to aid law enforcement officials in
conducting their investigations.
Science that is used for the purpose of law

Truth vs. Myth

What is the C.S.I. Effect?A RECENT PHENOMENON, CREATING ELEVATED STANDARDS AND HEIGHTENED
EXPECTATIONS IN THE MINDS OF JURORS AND OTHERS OF THE ABILITY OF REAL-LIFE
FORENSIC SCIENCE, THAT AROSE FROM TELEVISION SHOWS LIKE CSI, WHICH CAN
DISTORT THE REALITY OF THE SCIENCE.
CRIME LABS ARE WELL EQUIPPED WITH THE LATEST HIGH-TECH INSTRUMENTATION
CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATORS PROCESS THE CRIME SCENE.
CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATORS KNOW AND DO EVERYTHING.
CRIMES CAN BE SOLVED WITHIN THE HOUR WITH HIGH-TECH EQUIPMENT
DNA CAN SOLVE MOST CRIMES
ALL CASES CAN BE SOLVED WITH HIGH-TECH SCIENCE
FORENSIC SCIENCE RESULTS ARE NEVER WRONG
FORENSIC SCIENCE IS GLAMOROUS

How do you think the C.S.I. Effect has influenced Justice
Systems JURIES MORE INFORMED ABOUT HOW SCIENCE IS USED IN ANALYZING EVIDENCE…GOOD BUT
UNREASONABLE EXPECTATIONS
NO STATISTICAL EVIDENCE THAT JURORS WHO WATCH CSI INFLUENCE THE OUTCOME BUT
PROSECUTORS HAVE TO NOW EXPLAIN WHY CERTAIN EVIDENCE IS NOT PRESENTED
CRIMINALS ARE BECOMING MORE CAREFUL…WEARING GLOVES, WASHING UP, BURNING
EVIDENCE…HOWEVER DESTROYING EVIDENCE ALSO LEAVES CLUES AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT
TO NOT LEAVE DETECTABLE CLUES
INCREASE IN NUMBER OF PEOPLE PURSUING CAREERS AS FORENSIC SCIENTISTS
MORE “EXPERT FOR HIRE” JUNK SCIENTISTS AVAILABLE…SIMILAR TO AMBULANCE CHASING
LAWYERS

The development of
Forensic Science

Till now, the origin of the concept of forensic science is unknown.
Most of the historical experts agree that the concept of forensic
science was originated in the sixteenth century (Museum 2008). From a global perspective, the earliest applications of forensic
techniques were used to explain suspicious deaths, they were the
forerunners of forensic medicine and forensic pathology.
Records from various places around the globe on these matters date
back not only centuries, but in some cases, thousands of years.

Forensic science in this sense is not new. However, the approaches to forensic science, and how
it has been institutionalised, have varied greatly. A Western exposition of forensic science
generally sees it as being tied to the scientific revolution and the application of the scientific
method to policing. In this respect, it has paralleled the development of criminology, which also
emerged in part from forensic medicine, as a specialist field.
Forensic science and criminology were intertwined in their formative years in the late 1800s in
Europe (Knepper, 2018; see also Williams, 2015).
The key reason for this overlap is that forensic science and criminology shared similar aims.
Forensic science was directly tied to policing and the solving of crimes – answering questions
such as: who did what and why? Criminology was the application of science to understanding
and addressing crime – answering questions such as: why did someone do that? And what
should be done about it? (Knepper, 2018).
