INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE SOCIETY TECHNOLOGY AND

Guessing Game! Volunteers will read the text displayed. Volunteers will answer the following questions: Why is this statement problematic? In terms of your prior knowledge in Science? Who do you think said this statement?

"Bakit parang lahat ng inyong  budget  puro   research ?  Baliw na baliw kayo sa  research.  Aanhin ninyo ba ' yung   research ?

Rappler, 2019 Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa

“ …the video comes from the YouTube channel  On the Table  in which the presenter discussed his personal doubts about vaccines in general... …The presenter also expressed apparent doubts regarding climate change, accusations of China spreading COVID-19 , and transphobic comments.” Entertainment.com, 2019 Letitia Wright “My intention was not to hurt anyone, my ONLY intention of posting the video was it raised my concerns with what the vaccine contains and what we are putting in our bodies . Nothing else,"

Why do we need a background in Science? …to have evidence-based opinion and thought process that is not solely driven by emotions

SCIENCE is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence. s ciencecouncil.org

scientia Latin, “knowledge” ► Science is an intellectual activity carried on by humans that is designed to discover information about the natural world in which humans live and to discover the ways in which this information can be organized into meaningful patterns. A primary aim of science is to collect facts (data). An ultimate purpose of science is to discern the order that exists between and amongst the various facts. Dr. Sheldon Gottlieb, from a lecture series in the University of Alabama

► Religion is a culture of faith; science is a culture of doubt . Richard Feynman, Nobel-prize-winning physicist ► Science is always wrong . It never solves a problem without creating ten more . George Bernard Shaw, Irish playwright and Critic

MOST COMMON PERCEPTION OF SCIENCE

technology the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life or, as it is sometimes phrased, to the change and manipulation of the human environment. Britannica.com

tekhnē + logia Greek, “study of crafts/art” ► The rational process of creating   means   to order and transform matter, energy, and information to realize certain valued ends . ► The set of means (tools, devices, systems, methods, procedures) created by the technological process. ► The knowledge that makes the technological process possible . It consists of the facts and procedures necessary to order and manipulate matter, energy, and information, as well as how to discover new means for such transformations. ► A subset of related technological objects and knowledge . ► The system consisting of the technological process, technological objects, technological knowledge, developers of technological objects, users of technological objects, and the worldview that has emerged from and drives the technological process. This is referred to as the technological system.

◄A LONG, LONG, LONG TIME AGO… MORE RECENT TIME… ► TECHNOLOGY TIMELINE

Society A society is a group of people involved with each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or social territory , typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Source: https://www.sciencedaily.com/terms/society.htm

It may be illustrated as an economic, social, or industrial infrastructure, made up of a varied collection of individuals. Members of a society may be from different ethnic groups. The word society may also refer to an organized voluntary association of people for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic, or other purposes.

WHAT IS STS? It is a field interested in the nature of science and its place in society.

STS concerns itself with the following questions:

a. How does science work? Fact-finding Systematic/Methodological Evidence-based

b. How have scientific research ethics evolved? What ethical issues are now being contested? c. How are we to understand scientific controversies?

d. How do societies and government allocate resources for scientific research and science-based policies?

e. How is scientific knowledge and practice affected by economic, political, religious, or philosophical currents in a given time and place?

Key takeaways 1. STS is the interplay between science, technology and society. It focuses on how each one element affects all the other elements. 2. It is essential for each one to have a holistic understanding of how science molds and impacts the society. 3. Policies that lack of evidence may cost and do more damage than benefits.
