4. Overview - Material Master The material master contains information on all the materials that a company procures or produces, stores, and sells. For a company the material master record represents the central source for data on materials. The material master is used by all components in the SAP Logistics System. Every area of responsibility can have a material master view because different user department in a company work with same material and each of these departments to store different information on the material. Each department has its own material master record view.

6. Material Type - Overview Materials with the same basic attributes are grouped together and assigned to a material type. This allows you to manage different materials in a uniform manner in accordance with your company's requirements. When creating a material master record, you must assign the material to a material type. The material type determines which business process (such as sales, production, or purchasing) and functions (use of material in BOM or routing) are allowed for material. Material types are created to manage different according to the company standard requirements, materials with same characteristics are grouped and assigned a material type. Examples of material types are Raw materials, packing materials, semi-finished products, finished products.

11. Material Numbering Material Number uniquely identifying a material master record, and thus a material. External number 4ssignment : If your company uses mnemonic keys (normally alphanumeric), you enter the character string you want to use as the material number when you create the material master record. Internal number assignment: If your company uses no mnemonic keys, you do not enter a material number when creating a material master record. Instead, the system assigns a consecutive number to the material. This number is visible when you maintain the material master record. Material numbers can be up to 18 characters long. When creating a material master record, the type of number assignment allowed depends on the material type chosen. In the standard R/3 System, one external number range and one internal number range can be defined for each material type or group of material types.

17. Material Status Material Status allows you to control the usability of material for business purposes. The material status tells you whether a material is subject to restrictions (like material blocked for purchasing), and what they are. For example, a material may be a part under development or one to be discontinued. The use of a material can be restricted in a number of ways: Client level Plant level You can define the material status for all plants (client level) in basic data view and separately for each plant (Plant level) in plant views. Material Status on client level overrides the plant dependent material status.
