TOPIC : PHYSICAL WORLD CLASS : XI SUBJECT : PHYSICS PREPARED BY: M.G.ADHAU , PGT-PHYSICS. J.N.V.NANDED (M.S.)

THE POINTS TO BE DISCUSSED 1.What is Physics? 2 . Scope and excitement of Physics 3. Physics, technology and society 4.Fundamental forces in nature.

1.What is Physics ? The word science originates from the Latin word ‘Scientia’ meaning to know. What is Science? A systematic attempt to understand the natural phenomenon in as much detail and depth as possible.

Scientific Method: Steps: i . Systematic observations. ii. Controlled Experiments. iii.Qualitative and quantitative reasoning. iv. Mathematical modeling. v . Prediction and verification or falcification.

Physics: Physics comes from Greek word ‘fusis’ meaning nature Physics can be broadly described as the study of basic laws of nature and their manifestation in different natural phenomenon.

In the study of Physics there are two Principal thrusts. 1.Unification 2.Reduction. 1.Unification means attempting to explain diverse physical phenomenon in terms of few concepts and laws. Ex. laws of motion, Maxwell’s equations. 2.Reduction means attempting to derive the properties of a bigger ,more complex system from properties of its constituent simpler parts. Ex. Thermodynamics is based on its constituent parts such as temperature ,internal energy, entropy etc.

Scope and excitement of Physics. Two domains of interest. 1.Macroscopic 2.Microscopic

Include phenomenon on laboratory, terrestrial or astronomical scales. Classical Physics Mechanics Electro- dynamics Optics Thermo- dynamics 1.Macroscopic

2.Microscopic Include molecular, atomic or nuclear phenomenon. Quantum mechanics Deals with constitution and structure of matter Deals with interaction with elementary particles

3. Physics, technology and society Steam Engine -industrial revolution in 18 th century Some times technology gives new physics: Wireless communication-basic laws of electricity and magnetism Nuclear fission: basis of nuclear reactor and nuclear weapons. Computer technology gift of Physics. Alternative sources of energy.

Fundamental forces in nature 1.Gravitational force: Mutual attraction between any two objects by virtue of their masses. 2.Electromagnetic force: Force between charged particles. 3.Strong Nuclear Force: Binds protons and neutrons in nucleus. This is strongest of all fundamental forces. 4.Weak nuclear Force: Appear in nuclear process such as beta decay.
