Table of contents 01 Introduction Functions of the Skeleton Classification of bones Examples of animals and Number of it’s bones 02 03 04

Introduction The skeletal system consists of the bones and joints 01

Bones and Joints function in the body Hard Tissue, mostly calcium, provides support Location of where two or more bones meet. Bones Joints

Functions of the Skeleton 02

4 Functions of the Skeleton 2 3 Protects soft body parts Supports the body produces blood cells 1 5 6 stores minerals and fats stores minerals and fats along with the muscles) permits flexible body movements

Classification of bones 03

4 Classification of bones 2 3 Short (Cube shapes, about equal lengths and widths) Long (Longer then they are wide) Flat (Plate like and have a broad surface) 1 5 Irregular (Varied shapes with many connections) Round (Circular shape)

Examples of animals and Number of it’s bones 04

Giraffe The giraffe skeleton consists of ~ 170 bones . The dry mass of the skeleton is 70 g.kg-1 body mass. The average chemical composition of their bones is 33% minerals (mainly calcium and phosphorus in a ratio of 2:1), 34% collagen, and 33% water.

Lion Lions have 250-260 bones in their body. They have the same number of bones as all species of cats. The number of bones varies slightly because cats have different sized tails

Dog Dogs have on average between 319 – 321 bones in their body. The main difference in the number of bones has to do with the tail length, i.e. shorter tails have fewer vertebrae than longer tails. Some breeds can also have extra bones in their hind dewclaws.
