An Introduction • Space science is such a science where all the scientific disciplines and principles are used. This science is mostly applied to space explorations and operations. • Space science encompasses all of the scientific disciplines that involve space exploration and study natural phenomena and physical bodies occurring in outer space, such as space medicine and astrobiology. • Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence demonstrated by machines, as opposed to natural intelligence displayed by animals including humans. • Space is such an area or field of application where computers are heavily used. It requires too much of calculations and testing and on-time or on-the-spot decisions. • After the arrival of computers, many of these complexities in space science has decreased as most of the calculations are done by computers in today ’s time. • But there are still many problems in space exploration that cannot be solved by humans and computers alone, and it seems that humans cannot take decisions all time due to many factors like time and distance and so Artificial Intelligence(AI) seems to be the only solution. 2
Why we need AI in Space? • To achieve a small feat such as getting into orbit there are a lot of calculations we need to do. • Also there are many such cases in which there would be time delay in the delivery of signals from one point to another in space or to earth for humans to decide. • So with AI onboard the spacecraft can decide on its own without human intervention. • This way AI can help taking timely and resource saving decisions which can save hours of waiting, energy, and human resources. How AI can be helpful to humans who are in space? • In space AI can be very very helpful to our astronauts in their various types of work. • For example, if the astronauts in ISS who do research on various things, can just ask the AI assistant called CIMON 2 and it will solve their queries like we ask Alexa. • AI can also help in autonomous navigation of the space craft to the ISS (This maneuver is very difficult to do manually) and help in docking to the ISS(International Space Station) and can ensure the safety the lives of crew onboard. • One of the very recent and famous example of this is Dragon Crew Capsule. 5

Disadvantages of AI in Space • Developing an AI for space missions requires a lot amount of time, money, processing power, expertise and data. • Developing an AI for space missions and for long term and permanent residence in space is not an easy task. • It can be a tedious task at times to create an AI for each and every mission. 17
