DEFINITION Quality Assurance is a program that guarantees quality patient care by tracking outcomes through scheduled reviews Quality assurance is the process of verifying or determining whether the products or services meet or exceed the customers expectations. Guidelines are developed for all the processes and when formally adopted becomes the QA Program. Quality Assurance is the monitoring of activities of clients to determine the degree of excellence attained in the implementation of the activities.
DEFINITION cont.. Quality Assurance in Nursing and Midwifery is a pledge to the public by Nurses and Midwives that they will work toward the goal of optimal achievable degree of excellence in the service rendered to every patient. PRINCIPLES OF QUALITY ASSURANCE 1. CUSTOMER FOCUS: It focuses on patients care 2. Leadership: It helps to inculcate qualities of leadership in staff 3. Involvement of people: it should involve maximum nursing and midwifery staff so that standards of patient care can be maintained 4. Process approach: Focuses on a systematic and planned approach to provision of care 5. Factual approach to decision making: focuses on facts and appropriate reasons in taking certain decision for patients.
DIMENSIONS OF QUALITY ASSURANCE Technical Competence Refers to skills, capabilities and actual performance of health care providers, managers and support staff. Relates to how well providers execute practice guidelines and standards in terms of dependability, accuracy, reliability and consistency Access to Services Geographical access Economic Access Social or Cultural access (service acceptability due to values, beliefs and attitude)
