DIESEL ENGINE
PROPULSION ENGINEERING
PRESENTED TO: 3/E CHRISTOPHER S. ABRIGOS ENGINEERING
MARPOW- BSMT-2-F (GROUP 4)

WHAT IS DIESEL ENGINE
PROPULSION?
Type of INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE used in ships.01
Operates on COMPRESSION IGNITION PRINCIPLE.
Converts CHEMICAL ENERGY (Fuel) → MECHANICAL ENERGY
(Propeller motion).ENGINEERING

HOW IT WORKS? 02
1
2
3
4ENGINEERING
Air compressed in cylinder → temperature rises.
Diesel fuel injected into hot compressed air.
Spontaneous ignition occurs.
Piston moves downward → drives crankshaft.
Crankshaft rotates propeller shaft → ship moves
forward.
5

ENGINEERING Diesel engine drives propeller directly via gearbox. The
Engine is located fixed near propeller, less flexible layout.
KEY CHARACTERISTIC:ENGINEERING

BEST FOR:ENGINEERING
Fishing boats, Bulk carriers, Container ships, Tankers,
Ferries, Recreational boats, etc.
Their adaptability and scalability make them the go-to
choice for both small craft and large ocean-going
ships.ENGINEERING

ADVANTAGES

4ENGINEERING
ideal for long voyages.
continuous operation capability.
cheaper fuel, less maintenance.
fast speed adjustments.
high power-to-size ratio.

Noise & vibration.
Air pollution (NOx, SOx, particulate matter).
Heavy & bulky structure.
High initial purchase cost. ENGINEERING
