History of the Olympics: 1/3
Read the following article aloud.
The Olympics are a big sports event that happens every four years.
But do you know where it all started? Let's go back in time to
learn about the history of the Olympics.
The first Olympic Games were held in ancient Greece. They started
over 2,700 years ago in a place called Olympia. These games were
part of a festival to honor Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. The
ancient Olympics included many sports, like running, jumping,
discus throwing, and wrestling. Only men were allowed to
compete, and they had to be free citizens of Greece. They also
competed without any clothes!
The ancient Olympic Games continued for many years, but they
stopped in 393 AD. The Roman Emperor Theodosius banned them
because he thought they were a pagan festival.

History of the Olympics: 2/3
The modern Olympic Games began much later, in 1896. A
Frenchman named Pierre de Coubertin wanted to bring back the
Olympics to promote peace and friendship among countries. The
first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece. Athletes from
14 countries competed in 43 events, including track and field,
swimming, gymnastics, and cycling.
Since then, the Olympics have grown a lot. Now, athletes from
over 200 countries compete in more than 300 events. There are
two types of Olympic Games: the Summer Olympics and the
Winter Olympics. The Summer Olympics have sports like athletics,
swimming, and basketball, while the Winter Olympics have sports
like skiing, ice skating, and ice hockey. The Summer and Winter
Olympics happen every four years but are held two years apart
from each other.

History of the Olympics: 3/3
The Olympics have also had some important moments in history.
For example, in 1936, the Olympics were held in Berlin, Germany.
A black American athlete named Jesse Owens won four gold
medals, which was very important because it showed that Hitler's
racist ideas were wrong. In 1968, two American athletes, Tommie
Smith and John Carlos, raised their fists during the medal
ceremony to protest racial discrimination.
The Olympics are not just about sports. They are also about
bringing people together and promoting peace. The Olympic rings,
which are blue, yellow, black, green, and red, represent the five
continents of the world coming together.
Today, the Olympics are one of the biggest and most watched
events in the world. They inspire many people, young and old, to
do their best and work hard to achieve their dreams.
