Team Time 1
The Main Segments of Club Game Time Council Time Team Time 2
What is Team Time? Clubbers meet in small groups (6-10 children) by team colors with one leader. Clubbers stay in these small groups for the entire club year. The focus of Team Time is memorizing God ’ s Word. 3
4 Why Should We Learn Scripture? We are exhorted to meditate on God ’ s Word (Joshua 1:8). Meditation is only possible when memorization has already taken place. We are to always be prepared to give an answer (I Peter 3:15). Memorization equips us for opportunities when we do not have a Bible with us. We are to follow Christ ’ s example. 4
5 Why Should We Learn Scripture? ALL Scripture is profitable (II Timothy 3:16). Therefore, we should continue to memorize all of our lives. God ’ s Word always accomplishes His purpose (Isaiah 55:10,11). It may take time. It will involve a process. 5
What Do Team Directors Do? One team director for each color team will: Provide supplies for leaders each week, such as pencils, Awana cards, record forms. Make sure each small group has a leader. Discipline misbehaving clubbers when necessary. Ensure fair memorization standards. 6
What Do Team Directors Do? Gather and review all small group records and give them to the club secretary. Serve as supervisors to make sure Team Time runs smoothly. Answer questions from leaders during Team Time. Lead a small group if the leader is absent. 7
What Do Leaders of Small Group Do? Teach the new memory verse using various games and tools. Build relationships with clubbers. Explain the gospel message in clear ways at appropriate times. Help clubbers understand the Council Time lesson and how it applies to their lives. 8
What Do Leaders of Small Group Do? Listen to clubbers recite the previous week ’ s memory verse. Lead times of prayer and sharing. Complete record-keeping forms. Contact clubbers during the week. 9
What Do Leaders of Small Group Do? Small group leaders have the most direct role in helping clubbers grow spiritually! You will have an opportunity to see … Clubbers get saved. God work in the hearts of clubbers. Clubbers grow in their Christian life. 10
Take Your Places! Divide up into your team color groups. Truth Seekers Version What Is an Awana Card? Leaders of Small groups will receive weekly material called Awana Cards. Each Awana Card has five parts … 12
Awana Cards Have Five Parts The story A memory verse Questions about the story or verse A Bible lesson summary A fun activity 13
The Introduction Story This part introduces the Bible lesson. These stories help clubbers understand the biblical truths in each lesson. 14
Let ’ s Look in the Bible This part contains the memory verse with definitions of words that may be unfamiliar. 15
Let ’ s Think it Through This part allows clubbers to answer questions about the story or memory verse. Answers to these questions are in the Teacher ’ s Guide . 16
Lessons from God ’ s Word This is a summary of the Bible lesson. These lessons lay a biblical foundation on which the gospel will be presented. Each lesson builds on previous lessons. 17
Rewind This section has activities related to the lesson. Answers to these activities are at the end of the lesson in the Teacher ’ s Guide . Some activities may need to change for the small group format. 18
Optional Awana Card In some situations it is wise to introduce the Trinity later so that the children are allowed to continue to come to club. We have an optional Awana Card (Card 2) which leaves out the Trinity. The Trinity would then be introduced at the time the Deliverer is revealed. 19
How to Teach Memory Verses Use games and activities found in the Appendix on page 17. Clubbers should not only learn the words of the verse, they should also understand the meaning! See Appendix, page 23 for a list of helpful questions. This will bring the true life-changing power of God ’ s Word into their hearts and minds. 20
How to Teach Memory Verses For example: “ What do you think this verse means? ” “ What is the main point? ” “ Explain this verse in your own words. ” “ When could this verse be useful for you? ” “ How can you obey this Scripture this week? ” After they respond, leaders can guide them to a fuller understanding. 21
Studying Verses at Home Memorization improves when children can study the verses at home during the week. Clubbers should bring an exercise book or notebook to club each week, where they will write the weekly verse. This also brings the powerful Scriptures into the clubber ’ s home for other family members to read and hear. 22
Guidelines for Reciting Verses Each clubber should recite the new memory verse. Once the new verse is recited, clubbers may also recite verses from previous weeks. Leaders may give clubbers two “ helps ” (hints or clues). Each clubber who recites the verse receives points. 23
Small Group Success Sit in small groups (a circle or semi-circle is best). Keep the children close to you. Do not let them move around without permission. If possible, keep their backs to other groups or distractions. Encourage team unity by suggesting clubbers who memorize well help clubbers who struggle with memorizing. 24
Memorization Methods Hand Motions – Create hand motions for each of the key words or main phrases in the verse and have children “ act out ” the hand motions while saying the verse aloud together. Drawing Pictures – Draw pictures of the main phrases in the verse. 25
Memorization Methods Writing a Song – Make a melody for the verse the children are learning and sing it with them. Every leader can do this – you don't have to be a good singer! First Letters – Write the first letter for each word in the verse on a blackboard or poster. Have children recite each word in the verse aloud as you point to each of the first letters. 26
Take Your Places! Divide into your team color groups. Look at the memory verse for Awana Card Number 1. Using your assigned method, prepare to teach your verse to the other teams. Team Method Red Team Hand Motions Blue Team Drawing Pictures Green Team Writing a Song Yellow Team First Letters 27
Let ’ s Take a Break ! Back in 10 minutes, please! 28
Awarding Points The points system motivates clubbers. The small group leader can award points to clubbers who: Recite the memory verse (this is the priority!) Recite previously memory verses. Bring a friend . Bring a Bible. Anything else your program wants leaders to give points for! 29
Awarding Points Weekly points are recorded for each clubber on the Attendance and Achievement Report. 30
Awarding Points Always give more points for memory verses than any other activity. Example: Give 20 points for reciting a verse and 10 points for answering a question. The individual points will be added to the team total at the end of the meeting. 31
Awarding Points Use the wall chart to recognize clubbers who recite the weekly verse. 32
Extra Credit Some clubbers are capable of learning more than one verse per week. You have some options for extra credit assignments: Assign a longer passage of Scripture. Review verses learned previously. A leader or listener may be designated to listen to extra credit verses each week. 33
Let ’ s Review: Team Time What is the focus of Team Time ? How many clubbers are in a group ? How can clubbers earn points ? What gets more points than anything else ? 34
Take Your Places Using your chosen Team Time leaders, practice a Team Time segment. Divide teams into two small groups with one small group leader per group. Review slides eight, nine, and ten for the list of activities led by the small group leader. Teach the verse from Awana Card Two. 35
