Research Quantitative Research Problems and Research Questions in Quantitative Approach
Research Problem A research problem can be any question that you want to answer and any assumption that you want to challenge or investigate.
The importance of formulating research problem It is the first and most important step of the research process It will determine almost every step follow: The type of study design that can be used The type of sampling technique that can be employed The research instrument that can be used or developed The types of analysis that can be undertaken
Source of research problems Most research in the humanities revolves around for 4P: People Problems Programs Phenomena
Considerations in selecting a research problem When selecting a research topic there are 7 consideration to keep in mind: Interest : should be the most important consideration in selecting problem Magnitude: should have sufficient knowledge about the research process Measurement of concepts: if you are using concept, make sure you are clear about its indicator and their measurement
Considerations in selecting a research problem Level of expertise: make sure you have an adequate level of expertise for the task you are proposing Relevance: select a topic that is of relevance to you as a professional. Availability of data: if your topic entails collection of information form secondary sources, (office record, client, records, census/other already-published reports, etc.) before finalizing your topic, make sure that these data are available.
Considerations in selecting a research problem Ethical issues: When choosing a research topic, the researcher must make sure that the topic, purpose, and way of conducting the study do not cause any negative effects or violate research ethics — either toward the participants, the community, or the related institutions
Identifying Research Problems • Steps: 1. Read literature extensively 2. Observe practice 3. Analyze gaps 4. Narrow down focus
Characteristics of Good Research Questions
Stating research objective Research problems are stated as questions to be answered Objectives are stated as the goal of research to be achieved
Do the better the junior high school students read in English, the better they write in English? To investigate whether there is a significant relationship between junior high school students’ English reading ability and their English writing performance. Do the higher the vocabulary knowledge the students have the better they understand reading text? To investigate the relationship between students’ vocabulary knowledge and their reading comprehension achievement. Does implementing a blended learning approach lead to higher levels of student engagement in English classes compared to a traditional lecture-based approach? To compare the levels of student engagement in English class taught trough blended learning approach and those taught through a traditional lecture-based approach.
Class Activity 1. Read 3 journal articles and identify the research problem. 2. Rewrite into quantitative research questions.
