Urban Design Framework An Urban Design Framework (UDF) is a strategic planning tool that sets out a design vision for the future development of a place. It includes aims for the future area which may be brought into force by a planning scheme amendment.

Urban Renewal & Redevelopment The process where an urban neighborhood or area is improved and rehabilitated. With the decision and authority of a governing municipality, re-arranging land use, function and ownership features of a socially, economically or structurally decayed part of a certain city . In other words : the Rehabilitation of city areas by renovating or replacing dilapidated buildings with new housing, public buildings, parks, roadways, industrial areas, etc., often in accordance with comprehensive plans. Renewal just refers to modifying or renovating something & redevelopment means to tear something down and rebuild.
Urban Renewal or Redevelopment ?
Urban renewal is usually undergone for the purposes of persuading wealthier individuals to come live in that area. Urban renewal or redevelopment is a often part of the gentrification process . The process of wealthier residents moving to an area, and the changes that occur due to the influx of wealth. As wealthier inhabitants move into an area that is already populated with lower-income residents, the neighborhood begins to change as well. Gentrification Gentrification
KEY ELEMENTS OF URBAN RENEWAL STRATEGY'S APPROACH An urban renewal strategy is a comprehensive and holistic approach will be adopted to rejuvenate the existing urban area. A people-oriented approach to urban renewal, to balance the interests and needs of all sectors of the community and not to sacrifice the lawful rights of any particular group . The key elements of the Government's people-oriented approach to urban renewal include:- a. Restructuring and re-planning designated older built-up areas; b. Designing more effective and environmentally-friendly local transport and road networks; c. Rationalizing land uses which are incompatible with the surrounding areas; d. Redeveloping broken-down buildings into new buildings of modern standard and environmentally-friendly design; e. Rehabilitating buildings in need of repair f. Redeveloping or revitalizing under-utilized industrial areas; g . Preserving buildings, sites and structures of historical, cultural or architectural interest h. Preserving as far as practicable the local characteristics of older neighborhoods ;
i . Preserving the social networks of the local community; j. Providing purpose-built housing for groups with special needs , such as the elderly and the disabled; k. Providing more open space and community facilities; l. Enhancing the townscape with attractive urban design and by the provision of landscaping, open space and suitable street furniture; m. Providing adequate and affordable rehousing for tenants n. Providing fair and reasonable compensation to owners whose properties are resumed for the implementation of redevelopment projects.
