Today, even animals like donkeys, mules, rabbits and insects such as bees are being raised as part of livestock farming .
Have you gone to the wet market with your mother to buy fish or meat? Have you seen a small stall selling goats or gone to a pet store?
ANIMALS THAT CAN BE RAISED A. Four-legged animals 1. Goat – they can be easy to raise. They are hoofed mammals in the genus “Capra”. They are herbivores (plant-eaters). They only eat grass, herbs, tree leaves and other plant material. They are raised for their meat and milk.
2. Cow – is raised in many reasons. Their milk is the major ingredient in making cheese and other dairy products. Their meat (beef) is a source of food. Their skin is used as the raw materials for making bags and shoes. They are also use as work animals to pull carts and to plow fields.
3. Pig - is also known as hog or swine. Their meat and entrails are in demand as food. They are sold for other reason besides source of food. They can be sold as a breeder or as piglets to be raised by other growers.
B. Fish 1. Tilapia - they can be grown in fresh water like ponds, tanks, and cage systems. They come in several colors, but red and black tilapia is the most well-known species. Fresh tilapia is also an excellent source of phosphorous, niacin, selenium, Vitamin B12, and potassium.
2 . Bangus or Milkfish - is the main aquaculture product in the Philippines. It can survive in confined fresh or salty water fish pens and marine cages. They are grown as a source of food. Their meat is tasty.
Some of the hazards or harm to be avoided in raising animals: 1. Animals can directly cause injury such as skin cuts or release of toxins. Animals can transmit also certain infectious diseases such as salmonella and leptospirosis.
2. Confining so many animals in one place produces much more waste than the surrounding land can handle. This condition results in pollution. 3. The accumulation of animal waste causes respiratory problems, skin infections, and other diseases.
4. Pesticide exposure can cause short-term and long-term illnesses to the caretaker. Those who prepare the pesticides can be exposed to toxic chemicals due to spills, defective, missing or inadequate protective equipment. 5. Noise from livestock can badly affect your ears.
How do growers prevent or avoid these hazards?
Ways to prevent hazards caused by animal raising 1. Regularly walk around or inspect the farm to see if there is damage in the fences. 2. Make sure everyone involved in the business understands and uses safety procedures. Ensure that everyone can do first aid in case of emergency.
3. Make sure that all equipment are in good condition. 4. Understand and follow safety rules/ guidelines. 5. Ask the help of an expert in preparing the safety guidelines to be observed when in the farm
6. Use appropriate safety equipment in animal/fish raising. Direct Sellers are people who sell products and by-products directly to the consumers.
