The Indian Renaissance was a socio-intellectual movement that took place in the 19th century, and was marked by a resurgence of cultural and intellectual activity. The movement was a response to the decline of values in society, and was aimed at creating a new cultural world that could suit the needs of the emerging middle class.
Some of the key features of the Indian Renaissance include:
Abolition of inhuman practices: The Renaissance led to the abolition of practices like sati and infanticide, and the abandonment of cruel religious rituals like hook swinging and human sacrifice.
Women's emancipation: Women gained some degree of freedom from patriarchal control.
Reformation of Hinduism: An important part of the Renaissance was the reformation of Hinduism.
Introduction of scientific concepts: The English invasion introduced Indians to scientific concepts and liberalism.
Translation of Indian scriptures: European traders translated and revived Indian scriptures, such as the Vedas and epics.
The Indian Renaissance laid the foundation for a united and self-aware India, and contributed to the struggle for independence and the formation of a modern Indian nation.
Some leaders of the Indian Renaissance include Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Annie Besant, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Virchand Gandhi, and Baba Amte.
