04.06 The Periodic Table of
Elements

Neon, gets its name from the Greek word ‘neos’
which means new.
The chemical symbol is Ne, the average atomic
mass is 20.179, and the atomic number is 10.
The number of valence electrons is 8.

Neon is located on the 18th column and the 2nd row.
Helium, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, Radon, Florine,
Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine, Oxygen, Sulfur,
Selenium, Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Carbon, and
Hydrogen are all elements with similar properties.
Neon is commonly found in Earth’s atmosphere.

Neon is commonly found in Earth’s atmosphere.
Neon is used to make neon signs because in a
vacuum tube the gas will begin glowing a reddish
orange color.
There are no definitive compounds because Neon
has a very low polarisability.

Neon was discovered from evaporating solid
argon and collecting the gases.
Neon gas can create amazing lights but won’t
react with anything other than other neon
particles.
