FOUR STROKE ENGINE

What is stroke? The piston movement from Top Dead Centre (T.D.C) to Bottom Dead Centre(B.D.C) or The Piston movement from Bottom Dead Centre(B.D.C) to Top dead centre(T.D.C)

Four Stroke names Suction Stroke (intake stroke) Compression Stroke Expansion stroke(Working stroke)(Power stroke) Exhaust stroke

1. Suction stroke Initially piston moves up to down (TDC to BDC) that time only inlet valve is opened and exhaust valve is closed Vacuum is created in cylinder and Charge( Air+Fuel mixture) enters into cylinder through inlet valve. This stroke is known as suction or intake stroke

2. Compression Stroke Both valve are closed Piston moves downward to upward (BDC to TDC) Charge is compressed at high pressure and temperature. This stroke is known as Compression stroke.

3. Expansion stroke (Power or working stroke) At the end of compression stroke, spark plug fires igniting the charge. Both valve are closed. The resultant explosion moves the piston TDC to BDC which gives power to engine and making the car go. here work and power both gains so this stroke is known as power or working stroke also.

4. Exhaust Stroke In this stroke exhaust or outlet valve is opened and inlet valve is closed. Piston moves from BDC to TDC which pushes exhaust gases outside through outlet valve . This stoke is known as exhaust stroke

Working of Four stroke engine

Important points of 4 stroke engine It has two revolution of crankshaft in four strokes Four stroke engine is heavy and large. Thermal efficiency is more compare to two stroke. Mechanical efficiency is less compare to two stroke It is used for heavy work and it can take more load compare to two stroke engine Use: due to high load carrying capacity it is used in Truck, tractor, Bus, JCB etc heavy vehicle

Thank you.
