Matiari To Lahore HVDC Transmission Line: An Overview Prepared By M. Hassam Aziz Department Of Electrical Engineering Swedish College of Engineering and Technology, Wah Cantt

PRESENTATION OUTLINE Introduction Literature Review Why HVDC ? Components Of HVDC Transmission System Types Of DC Links Matiari To Lahore HVDC Project Feasibility Studies Project Description Schematic diagram Project Progress Update Conclusion References

Introduction HVDC stands for High Voltage Direct Current and today it is a well-proven technology all over the world . Current transmission network (HVAC ) of Pakistan is heavily loaded With the increasing requirements of electrical power supply, the facilities have to be increased Here HVDC (high voltage direct current) transmission plays major role in power transmission

Literature Review Name Total Length (Cable/Pole) (km) Voltage (kV) Power (MW) Year Remarks Gotland and Mainland HVDC Link Sweden 98 100 20 1954 First commercial HVDC transmission in the world Hokkaido – Honshu Japan 193 250 300 1979 First HVDC transmission line of Japan Pacific DC Intertie USA 1362 500 3100 1970 First commercial line of USA. Zhou Shan China 54 100 50 1982 First HVDC line of china Rihand -Delhi India 814 500 1500 1990 2 nd HVDC line of india . First in 1989 (196 km, 200 kV, 100 MW) Matiari -Lahore Pakistan 878 660 4000 2021 Expected First HVDC line of Pakistan

Literature Review Now the longest transmission line is the Rio Madeira in Brazil : length: 2385km, Power: 7.1GW voltage: 600kV. Latest HVDC line of USA : length 1150km, power: 4GW voltage: 500kV. Latest UHVDC line of china : Length: 2000 km, Power: 12 G W, voltage: 1100kV Northeast Agra line India : Length: 1728 km, Power: 8000 MW, voltage: 800 kV

Why HVDC? Losses are less in DC transmission while comparing to AC transmission Less conductors are required in DC transmission 5 times more energy can be transmitted as compare to AC(same lines ) No Inductive and capacitive effect in DC transmission. The reduced size, cost and improved reliability of power electronic converters, has made HVDC transmission more reliable and widespread.

Feasibility Studies Purposed Routes: Summary Of T/L Route Options:

MAP

Project Description Project Matiari to Lahore ±660kV HVDC Transmission Line Project Technology ±660 KV Bipole HVDC with Converter/ Grounding Electrode Stations Project Description Scope: Evacuation of Power from Coal based Plants located at Thar , Port Qasim and Hub. 4000 MW ±660 kV HVDC Line Matiari -Lahore, 878km.  Associated 500kV HVAC T/Lines at both Converter Stations.    Project Details 2000 MW with 10% overloaded capability for 2 hours Location Matiari to Lahore Province Sindh and Punjab Estimated Cost (US $ Billion ) 1.658 Executing Company / Sponsors China Electric Power Equipment and Technology Co.Ltd.(CET) / State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) Financing Independent Transmission Company (ITC) Coordinating Ministry Ministry of Water and Power Supervising Agency National Transmission & Despatch Company (NTDC)

Project Description Towers Total Towers in the proposed line are estimated to be about 1898 681 Towers will be erected in Sindh while the remaining towers are to be raised in Punjab . A verage distance between Towers can vary from 275 to 340 m considering the topography and land use of the areas . Three types of Towers will be used in the system. These include Suspension, Medium Angle and Heavy Angle/Dead End

Project Description Conductor Type: steel reinforced aluminum conductor 4×JL/G3A-1000/45 Converter Station: Two converter stations are purposed in this project. One in Matiari ( for AC to DC rectification ), 2 nd is in Lahore ( for DC to AC conversion )

Project Progress Update Feasibility study completed Land acquisition for converter stations at Lahore and Matiari completed Agreement signed between PPIB ( P RIVATE  P OWER  & I NFRASTRUCTURE   B OARD) and State Grid of China on May 2018 Financial Closed (FC) achieved on 27th February 2019(US $ 1.658 B) Expected COD in March 2021

Conclusion It’s a great sign that Pakistan is moving towards the use of modern transmission technologies. This HVDC project will give a little relief to existing HVAC transmission network
