Designthinkingisadesignmethodologythatprovides
asolution-basedapproachtosolvingproblems.It’s
extremelyusefulintacklingcomplexproblemsthatare
ill-definedorunknown,byunderstandingthehuman
needsinvolved,byre-framingtheprobleminhuman-
centricways,bycreatingmany ideas
inbrainstormingsessions,andbyadoptingahands-
onapproachinprototypingandtesting.Understanding
thesefivestagesofDesignThinkingwillempower
anyonetoapplytheDesignThinkingmethodsinorder
tosolvecomplexproblemsthatoccuraroundus—in
ourcompanies,inourcountries,andevenonthe
scaleofourplanet.

ThefirststageoftheDesignThinkingprocessisto
gainanempathicunderstandingoftheproblemyou
aretryingtosolve.Thisinvolvesconsultingexpertsto
findoutmoreabouttheareaofconcernthrough
observing,engagingandempathizingwithpeopleto
understandtheirexperiencesandmotivations,aswell
asimmersingyourselfinthephysicalenvironmentso
youcangainadeeperpersonalunderstandingofthe
issuesinvolved.Empathyiscrucialtoahuman-
centereddesignprocesssuchasDesignThinking,
andempathyallowsdesignthinkerstosetasidetheir
ownassumptionsabouttheworldinordertogain
insightintousersandtheirneeds.

informationyouhavecreatedandgatheredduringthe
Empathisestage.Thisiswhereyouwillanalyseyour
observationsandsynthesisetheminordertodefine
thecoreproblemsthatyouandyourteamhave
identifieduptothispoint.Youshouldseektodefine
theproblemasaproblemstatementinahuman-
centredmanner.

ownwishoraneedofthecompanysuchas,“We
needtoincreaseourfood-productmarketshare
amongyoungboysandgirlsby5%,”amuchbetter
waytodefinetheproblemwouldbe,“youngboysand
girlsneedtoeatnutritiousfoodinordertothrive,be
healthyandgrow.”

gathergreatideastoestablishfeatures,functions,and
anyotherelementsthatwillallowthemtosolvethe
problemsor,attheveryleast,allowuserstoresolve
issuesthemselveswiththeminimumofdifficulty.In
theDefinestageyouwillstarttoprogresstothethird
stage,Ideate,byaskingquestionswhichcanhelpyou
lookforideasforsolutionsbyasking:“Howmightwe
…encourageyoungboysandgirlstoperforman
actionthatbenefitsthemandalsoinvolvesyour
company’sfood-productorservice?”

DuringthethirdstageoftheDesignThinkingprocess,
designersarereadytostartgeneratingideas.You’ve
growntounderstandyourusersandtheirneedsinthe
Empathisestage,andyou’veanalysedand
synthesisedyourobservationsintheDefinestage,
andendedupwithahuman-centeredproblem
statement.Withthissolidbackground,youandyour
teammemberscanstartto"thinkoutsidethebox“to
identifynewsolutionstotheproblemstatementyou’ve
created,andyoucanstarttolookforalternativeways
ofviewingtheproblem.

TherearehundredsofIdeationtechniquessuchas
Brainstorm,Brainwrite,WorstPossibleIdea,
andSCAMPER(Substitute,Combine,Adapt,Modify,
Puttoanotheruse,Eliminate,Reverse).
BrainstormandWorstPossibleIdeasessionsare
typicallyusedtostimulatefreethinkingandtoexpand
theproblemspace.Itisimportanttogetasmany
ideasorproblemsolutionsaspossibleatthe
beginningoftheIdeationphase.Youshouldpick
someotherIdeationtechniquesbytheendofthe
Ideationphasetohelpyouinvestigateandtestyour
ideassoyoucanfindthebestwaytoeithersolvea
problemorprovidetheelementsrequiredto
circumventit.

Thedesignteamwillnowproduceanumberof
inexpensive,scaleddownversionsoftheproductor
specificfeaturesfoundwithintheproduct,sotheycan
investigatetheproblemsolutionsgeneratedinthe
previousstage.Prototypesmaybesharedandtested
withintheteamitself,inotherdepartments,orona
smallgroupofpeopleoutsidethedesignteam.Thisis
anexperimentalphase,andtheaimistoidentifythe
bestpossiblesolutionforeachoftheproblems
identifiedduringthefirstthreestages.

Thesolutionsareimplementedwithintheprototypes,
and,onebyone,theyareinvestigatedandeither
accepted,improvedandre-examined,orrejectedon
thebasisoftheusers’experiences.Bytheendofthis
stage,thedesignteamwillhaveabetterideaofthe
constraintsinherenttotheproductandtheproblems
thatarepresent,andhaveaclearerviewofhowreal
userswouldbehave,think,andfeelwheninteracting
withtheendproduct.

Designersorevaluatorsrigorouslytestthecomplete
productusingthebestsolutionsidentifiedduringthe
prototypingphase.Thisisthefinalstageofthe5
stage-model,butinaniterativeprocess(contentof
discussion,stimulus,methodologyisadaptiveoverthe
courseofresearchprogramme),theresultsgenerated
duringthetestingphaseareoftenused
toredefineoneormoreproblemsandinform
theunderstandingoftheusers,theconditionsofuse,
howpeoplethink,behave,andfeel,andtoempathise.
Evenduringthisphase,alterationsandrefinements
aremadeinordertoruleoutproblemsolutionsand
deriveasdeepanunderstandingoftheproductand
itsusersaspossible.
