Physical Education (P.E.) Grade 9 Module 3 1 st Quarter SPORTS OFFICIATING

A system in sport is used to maintain order and fairness in implementing rules. It is the supervision of sports competitions in accordance with established rules. SPORTS OFFICIATING

Qualities of a Sports Official

These qualities refer to the physical attributes of an officiating official. Since an officiating official needs to catch up with every detail of what the athletes or player do on court, he needs to have a high level of fitness to be able to perform his job. PHYSICAL QUALITIES

These refer to the emotional readiness of an officiating official to perform his or her role in a game. Emotional attributes that an officiating official should possess includes confidence. It is having belief in oneself. EMOTIONAL QUALITIES

Mental Toughness is the term used to refer to all the qualities pertaining to one’s mental preparations in officiating a game. To be mentally tough requires one to stay focused, regulate one’s performance, handle pressure, awareness and control of thoughts and feelings and one’s command and control of the environment. MENTAL QUALITIES

These qualities refer to the ability to deal with others at any given situation. Complaints are inevitable in a game. It is the ability of an officiating official to settle disputes without sacrificing the integrity of a game and the officiating team. To develop such qualities requires practice just as the emotional qualities do. SOCIAL QUALITIES

Officials of the Game and their Functions

1 : REFEREE Inspects and approves all equipment, including court, baskets, ball, and backboards. Inspect timer’s and scorer’s signals. Designates the official timepiece and its operator Designates the official scorebook and the official scorer Responsible for notifying each captain three minutes before each half is begin Decides whether a goal shall count if officials disagree Has the power to make decisions on any points specifically covered by the rules Determines if ground rules are necessary.

2 : TIMEKEEPER Consults officials as to signals used to indicate a time-out and resumption of time. Keeps eyes on the officials throughout the game Checks on the duration of time-outs, substitutions, etc.

3 : SCORER Obtains names and numbers of all players who may participate in the game at least ten 10 minutes before the start of the game. At least three minutes before scheduled starting time, have each team designates its first five players. Reports any failure to comply to referees. Records field goals made, free throws made and missed, running summary of points scored, personal and technical fouls on each player, team personal. Fouls per half and time-outs.
