6.2.3 Basal metabolic rate Ong Yee Sing 2017

Basal metabolic rate 基本代谢率 Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the rate of expend of energy expended while at rest in room temperate , in the post-absorptive state ( 12 hours after meal ). BMR provides energy to maintain the basic living activities such as heart beat, external respiration, cellular metabolism etc . A respirometer 呼吸仪 can be used to measure the quantity of oxygen taken in or the quantity of carbon dioxide given out.

Quiz The basal metabolic rate (BMR) measures the rate of energy expenditure when _________________. a dieter is fasting the person is asleep the person is doing light office work the body is awake but resting

Factors that affect BMR Age Sex Size Endocrine system Pregnancy and lactation Drugs Species

Factors that affect BMR Age Babies has highest BMR BMR decreases by age Sex BMR is higher in male BMR is higher during pregnancy and lactation Endocrine system 内分泌系统 Active thyroid gland that secretes thyroid hormones that increase the basal metabolic rate. Drugs Stimulants 神经兴奋剂 such as nicotine 尼古丁 (smoking), cocaine 可卡因 and methamphetamines 甲基苯丙胺 (drug abuse) increases BMR

Size BMR is higher in small animals Small animals lose heat quicker due to greater surface area to volume ratio Require more energy to maintain body temperature Hence different species have different BMR Factors that affect BMR

Quiz The metabolic rate of a frog is lower than that of an elephant, but why do we say that smaller animal have a higher BMR? BMR per body mass is higher in smaller animal

Conclusion Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the rate of expend of energy expended while at rest in room temperate , in the post-absorptive state ( 12 hours after meal ).
