Key Language Structure: Adverbs

An  adverb  is a word that modifies (describes) a verb (he sings loudly), an adjective (very tall), another adverb (ended too quickly), or even a whole sentence (Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella). Adverbs often end in -ly, but some (such as fast) look exactly the same as their adjective counterparts.

Adverbs often modify verbs. This means that they describe the way an action is happening. Example: • Phillip sings loudly in the shower. • My cat waits impatiently for his food. • I will seriously consider your suggestion.

There are  5 different types of adverbs. 1. Adverbs of Degree -  They modify other verbs, adjectives, or adverbs making them stronger or weaker. 2. Adverbs of Frequency -  They express “how often” something takes place. In other words, they explain the intensity of occurrence that an event happens. 3. Adverbs of Place -  They describe “where” action takes place. In addition, we usually find adverbs of place after the main verb. 4. Adverbs of Time -  They tell us when the verb happened or will happen. 5. Adverbs of Manner -  They express how something happens.

Adverbs of Manner: It answers the question “how?”

It describes how the action is carried out in a sentence. We form adverbs of manner by adding -ly to adjectives. Others, however, do not end in -ly. Examples: • They seemed hopelessly dull. • Many turned out to be friendly and obliging. • I was punctually opening the school.

Take Note : Adverbs of manner are usually placed either after the main verb or after the object. It cannot be placed between a verb and its direct object. INCORRECT : She ate greedily the pizza. CORRECT : She ate the pizza greedily. CORRECT : She greedily ate the pizza.

Adverbs of Place It answers the question “where?”

It tells where something is done. They also specify both location and movement. These may be one-word adverbs or adverbial phrases.

Adverbs of Time tell when an action happened and for how long. Like adverbs of place, these may be one-word adverbs or phrases. It answers the question “when?”

Adverbial phrases that tell how long may also be placed at the end of the sentence for neutrality or before the sentence emphasis.
