THE GLOBALIZATION OF RELIGION

Much more than culture, religion has the most complex relationship with globalism.

A process of realignment in this global religious situation. Three faces: a. It implies the inevitable transformation of individual religious organizations

A process of realignment in this global religious situation. Three faces: b. It can be expected that new characteristics will be produced in the contents of doctrines and individuals

A process of realignment in this global religious situation. Three faces: c. Globalization may be accompanied by religions

To begin with, the two belief systems are diametrically opposed.

- Concerned with the sacred - Follows heavenly precepts - Assumes that there is the “possibility of communication between humans and the transcendent” RELIGION vs GLOBALISM - Preoccupied with material gain - Follows human- made laws - Refers to how much human action may lead to the highest level of material satisfaction and knowledge

Religious people are less concerned with wealth and all that comes along with it. Globalists are less concerned about whether they will spend eternity in heaven or hell. Their abilities are more mundane

To put in another way, a religious per son strives to be a saint whereas a globalist aspires to be a successful businessperson. Politics and the pursuit for power are despised by the religious because they are signs of humanity’s frailty, while the globalist sees them as both means and ends to further open up the world’s economies.

In actuality, the relationship between religion and globalism is much more complicated. Peter Beger argues that far from being secularized, the contemporary world… is furiously religious. Realities…

In most of the world, there are veritable explosions of religious fervor, occurring in one form or another in all the major religious traditions. Realities…

Religions are the foundations of modern politics. The Malaysian government places religion at the center of its political system. Its constitution explicitly states that “Islam is the religion of the Federation,” and the rulers of each state were also the “Head of the religion of Islam.” Realities…

Religion for and against Globalization

Today, almost any religious movement utilizes religion to resist “profane” globalization. However, two of the so-called “old world faiths,” Christianity and Islam , regard globalization as an opportunity to expand their presence over the globe rather than as a threat. Religion for and against Globalization

While faiths may profit from globalization process, this does not guarantee that their conflicts with globalist ideology will go away. Some Muslims see “globalization” as a Trojan horse that hides followers of Western principles who are eager to promote these concepts in their territories and eventually replace Islam. Religion for and against Globalization

The World Council of Churches , a group if Protestant denominations, has decried (disapproved) the detrimental impacts of economic globalization. It vowed that “we as churches make ourselves accountable to the victims of the project of economic globalization” by becoming the latter’s advocates inside and outside “the centers of power.” Religion for and against Globalization

The Catholic Church and its dynamic leader, Pope Francis, likewise condemned globalization’s “throw-away culture” that is “fatally destined to suffocate hope and increase risks and threats.” Religion for and against Globalization

The Lutherian World Federation 10 th Assembly’s 292-page declaration message included economic and feminist critics for globalization, sharing the voices of members of the Church who were affected by globalization. Religion for and against Globalization
