Applicationsofactinoids:
•Thehalflivesofnaturalthoriumanduraniumisotopesaresolong
thatwegetverynegligibleradiationfromtheseelementswefind
themineverydayuse.
•e.g.Th(IV)oxide,ThO
2with1%CeO
2wasusedasamajorsourceof
indoorlightingbeforeincandescentlampscameintoexistanceonly
becausetheseoxidesconvertheatenergyfromburningnaturalgas
tointenselight.Eventoday,thereisagreatdemandfortheselights
foroutdoorcamping.
