Between Stimulus &
Response: Our Power
to Choose
•"Between stimulus and response, man has the freedom
to choose." ~ Viktor Frankl
•“No one can hurt you without your consent” ~ Eleanor
Roosevelt
•“They cannot take away our self respect if we do not
give it to them.” ~ Ghandi
•We are not simply products of our circumstances or
conditioning. We have the freedom to choose our
response to any stimulus.
•God gives us free will to make choices.
•"I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing: therefore choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:19)

Proactivity: Taking
Responsibility for Our Lives
•“Our behavior is a function of our decisions,
not our conditions. We can subordinate
feelings to values. We have the initiative and
the responsibility to make things happen."
•Proactive individuals don't blame external
factors for their behavior.
•Instead they focus on what they CAN control,
acting based on values, not reacting to
emotions or circumstances.
•We are accountable for our actions before God.
•“So then each of us will give an account of
himself to God." (Romans 14:12)

Circle of Influence: Focusing
on What We Can Control
•"Proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of
Influence. They work on the things they can do
something about.”
•We have a Circle of Concern (things we worry about) and
a Circle of Influence (things we can affect). Proactive
people focus their energy on their Circle of Influence.
•Direct your energy towards things you can influence,
rather than worrying about what we cannot change.
•Trust God with things beyond our control.
•"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your
own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5)
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: The Infographics Edition.

The "Have's" vs. The "Be's":
Shifting From a Reactive to a
Proactive Mindset
•"The Circle of Influence is filled with the be's
-- I can be more patient, be wise, be loving.
It's the character focus."
•Reactive people focus on what they don't
have and what others should do. Proactive
people focus on "being" - what they can
become and how they can contribute.
•Renew your mind to align with God's will.
•"Be transformed by the renewing of your
mind" (Romans 12:2)

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: The Infographics Edition.

Making and Keeping
Commitments: Building
Integrity Through Action
•"The commitments we make to ourselves
and to others, and our integrity to those
commitments, is the essence and clearest
manifestation of our proactivity."
•Our ability to make and keep commitments
to ourselves and others is the clearest
manifestation of our proactivity and the
foundation of personal growth.
•Faith should be accompanied by works.
•"Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by
action, is dead." (James 2:17)

3.Proactivity: Taking Responsibility for Our

4.Circle of Influence: Focusing on What We

6.Making and Keeping Commitments: Building

Habit 1 is a pathway to
spiritual maturity and a life of
faithfulness and service to God.

The 30-Day Test: Putting
Proactivity into Practice
"For 30 days work only in your Circle of Influence. Make small
commitments and keep them. Be a light, not a judge. Be a model,
not a critic. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem."
Shift your focus to your Circle of Influence for 30 days. Make and
keep small commitments. Be a model, not a critic. Experience the
difference proactivity makes in your life.
Consistently apply God's teachings in daily life.
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only" (James 1:22)
