POLAR AND NONPOLAR MOLECULES
GEOMETRIC OF MOLECULES The geometry of molecule is very important in understanding the physical and chemical behavior of substances. Molecules of compound are formed of chemical bonds. Bonds are either ionic or covalent.
Electronegativity, which is the ability of an atom to draw shared electrons toward itself, has one important role in the formation of molecules.
The bond between atoms whose difference in electronegativities is less than 0.5 is considered NONPOLAR. If the electronegativity difference is between 0.5 and 2.0, it considered POLAR COVALENT. And lastly if the electronegativity difference between two atoms in a bond is 2.0 or more, it is generally considered IONIC.
Let us consider three substances H ,HF, and NaF . The electrons spend the same amount of time between the vicinity of the two atoms. The electrons transfer from sodium to fluorine.
For two unlike atoms, like in HF, the tendency to draw electrons toward themselves is in equal. So they tend spend near the more electronegative atom. One end or in molecule will be more negative than the other, so they from polar covalent bond.
In ionic compound such as NaF , when sodium and fluorine atoms come in contact with another, the valence electron of sodium transfer to the fluorine atom.
The electrostatic attraction between the sodium cation and the fluorine anion draws them together to form an electrically neutral sodium fluorine NaF ionic compound.
A solid lattice is formed when sodium cation is attracted to fluorine anion after an electron from a sodium atom transfers to an atom of fluorine. An ionic bond is formed between the two atom.
