The Handloom set up, often referred to as Khatka. These
handlooms have kept the tradition of Chanderi alive for
over 900 years..

The bags filled with sand, to keep the threads taut.. It takes
for a weaver to set up the loom for a particular design or
combination around 5 to 7 days, after which the producti on
of a sareebegins..

The sareesare woven in the handloom upside down. Hence, a
weaver has to repeatedly check the sareeusing a mirror.

The speciality of Chanderi sareesis that the design goes along wit h
the weaving, and are not embroidered. It takes anywhere between 4
to 30 days to make a saree in the handlooms.

Chanderi is primarily a cottage industry, with weavers making sar eesin
their homes. A weaver family normally has 2-3 handlooms in its home,
and a family weaves an average of 8-15 sareesevery month.

It's not at all difficult to spot a Bapu's Charkha in Chanderi ..

Chanderi is also locally known for it's Sitaphal (Sugar-apple). T he
