HISTORICAL APPROACH

HISTORICAL APPROACH also known as Historical Criticism, a method of analyzing and interpreting literary or artistic works by examining the historical context in which they were created. This includes understanding the social, political, cultural, and economic conditions of the time to uncover deeper meanings behind the work.

It asks: What was happening during the time this work was created? How did these events or conditions influence the author or artist? What historical themes are present in the work?

How do we use Historical Approach in a Critique? Research the historical background of the author, the time, and key events. Identify references to historical events or issues in the text. Analyze how the historical context influences the characters, setting, conflict, or theme. Interpret the meaning or message of the work based on its historical influences.

Examples of Historical Approach: “Noli Me Tangere” by Jose Rizal Historical Context: written during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. Critique: The novel reflects the injustices of the Spanish government and church. Rizal used this story to awaken the Filipino people’s sense of nationalism. “Night” by Elie Wiesel Historical Context: based on the Holocaust during World War II. Critique: The novel shows the real horrors faced by Jews under Nazi rule. Understanding the Holocaust helps us feel the pain, fear, and loss that the author experienced. C. “The Diary of Anne Frank” Historical Context: written by a Jewish girl hiding from the Nazis in World War II. Critique: The diary gives a personal view of life during the war. Using the historical approach, we can understand how fear, discrimination, and hope are deeply connected to that period in history.
