PREFACE TO THE REPERTORY PHILOSOPHICAL BACKGROUND The author was searching for a symptom for days in Repertories “Constant dull frontal headache, worse in the temples, with aching in the umbilicus.” So, author felt the need of a repertory arranged on the plan of Cruden’s Concordance of Bible . (like a supplemental index) so that only by referring to letter ‘U’, & under ‘umbilicus’, he could find the desired symptom. The idea came in Autumn 1876. CRUDEN’S CONCORDANCE OF THE BIBLE= index of the Bible with few words in each sentence, as an inseparable companion & helper. REPERTORY= index of the Materia Medicas . NEED OF THE REPERTORY- to quickly & certainly find any desired symptom in Materia Medica with its indicated remedy.
PREPARATION OF THIS REPERTORY- Selecting MORE CHARACTERISTIC PATHOGENETIC (proving) symptoms. Including only repeatedly verified clinical symptoms. When many medicines are given under the name of the condition (symptom/rubric) then considering them as suggestive. I ncluding Noun, verb, essential adjectives in the sentences. WORKING METHOD OF THIS REPERTORY- Select the commonly used words. Words should express central thought/idea/fact/condition/ object of the sentence or Noun, Ver b or Essential Adjective. Synonyms should be looked for if selected words could not be found. e.g. Female Sexual Organs, Catamenia- only 7 symptoms given. (It does not mean that this symptom is incomplete but, the author did not want to change the phraseology of Materia Medica. Instead, he used another word as “menses”).
A note given as Preference should always be given to a word expressing a condition, under the heading of which may be expected a classification of symptoms referring to the same organ or portion of the body. (ii) Sad vs. Sadness vs. Depression of Spirits Gradually it became apparent that the arrangement & grouping of words & subjects would bring together all symptoms bearing on the same subject, or affecting the same portion of the body, so that the physician will have before the human eye & mind, rubric of conditions & concomitants/more characteristic/reliable symptoms in Materia Medica for consideration & comparison. Rapidity & certainty increased for difficult art of accurate prescribing.
LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS (ix-xiii) Abbreviations in one column followed by Full name of medicine in second column & few common names in Bracket. No repetition of names. 420 medicines mentioned. Abies-c. to Ziz . Common names given for 29 medicines. [e.g. Staph.- Staphysagria (Delphinium)]
VOLUME I EXPLANATION IN VOLUME I Starts with Preparation of Repertory followed by Working method of this Volume. e.g. “ Imagination of having two heads.” Noun. Central thought. Look for ‘I’ in appropriate section. Find ‘Imagination’ along with all other symptoms grouped under it as well. e. g. “ Fancies seeing cats and dogs .” F C D
VOLUME I Difficulty may occur due to difference in phraseology of Materia Medica writers or choice of the section. So, SYNONYMS must also be thought of. e.g. “ Wants to do something and yet feels no ambition .” Instead look for ‘Desires’. e.g. “ Desires to kiss everybody.” Instead look for ‘Wants’.
