A Sample Technician and Company Tool Responsibility List

The following lists will change as industry needs evolve. As of 2025, this serves as a valid outline of tool responsibilities. Please review the comments section for details that explain how each tool is defined or when it should be used.

All tools provided by the company for van inventory are issued based on both need and the technician’s ability to use them. This list isn’t meant to include every tool available in the shop’s tool crib. Its purpose is to show which tools are considered the company’s responsibility and which belong to service van or shop technicians.

This is only an example list. Each dealership will have a similar version with slight differences. Still, it offers a useful starting point for understanding what you’ll need to bring as a technician, and what the dealership may supply if you’re qualified to use certain tools. For instance, if you don’t know how to weld, you won’t be assigned a welder.

additions to these requirements.

There are tools not listed, which they may want to consider. These tools may make the technician’s job
easier, and more efficient. Some examples might be flex sockets, universal joint, and offset wrenches.
