This became known as the “Schengen area”. The name was taken from the name of the town in Luxembourg where the first agreements were signed. This intergovernmental cooperation expanded to include 13 countries in 1997, following the signing of the Treaty of Amsterdam. Today, there are 25 members. Page 2

Travel Documents Intensive Course | Location | Date Travel Documents Intensive Course Schengen Area The  Schengen Area  comprises the territories of twenty-five European countries that have implemented the  Schengen Agreement. The Schengen Area operates very much like a single state for international travel purposes with border controls for travellers travelling in and out of the area, but with no internal border controls. The Schengen rules were absorbed into European Union (EU) law by the Amsterdam Treaty in 1999, although the area officially includes three non-EU member states, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and  de facto  includes three European micro-states, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City. All but two EU members states–Ireland and the United Kingdom–are required to implement Schengen and, with the exceptions of Bulgaria, Cyprus, and Romania have already done so. The area currently covers a population of over 400 million people and an area of 4,312,099 square kilometers. Croatia joining in 2012. Page 4

Travel Documents Intensive Course | Location | Date Travel Documents Intensive Course Measures adopted by Schengen states The removal of checks at common borders, replacing them with external borders checks . A common definition of the rules for crossing external borders. Separation in air terminals and ports of people traveling within the Schengen area from those arriving from countries outside the area. Harmonization of the rules regarding conditions of entry and visas for short stays. Coordination between administrations on surveillance of borders (liaison officers, harmonization of instruction and staff training). Page 5

Travel Documents Intensive Course Rules on travelling to the Schengen area and intra Schengen Travel Passengers coming from outside the Schengen area connecting to another Schengen member state undergo immigration controls at the first point of entry.
