ARBA MINCH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY FACULTY OF CIVIL ENGINEERIN Internship Report on Building Construction Project BRHANU TOPIYAW CONSTRUCTION PLC BY ABEL SISAY ABEL SISAY (NSR/078/13, SEC. B) Phone No: +251943348947 +251912247486 Email: [email protected] September Arba Minch, Ethiopia 2024

Introduction 1 Introduction and Background This presentation introduces my internship program and the hosting company, Birhan Tobiyaw Building Contractor. 2 Internship Experience I will discuss my overall internship experience, including site work and office activities. 3 Benefits Gained I will highlight the benefits I derived from this internship experience, such as skill development and practical knowledge. 4 Conclusion and Recommendations The presentation concludes with my overall reflections and recommendations based on my internship experience. 1

Background of the Hosting Company Birhan Tobiyaw Building Contractor Birhan Tobiyaw is a grade one engineering consultant specializing in building construction. Company History The company has a rich history and a strong track record in the construction industry. Main Office The company's main office is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 2

Organizational structure 3

The building is 1B+G+8 office and mixed use building Project: Devlopment Bank of Ethiopia Location : Adama Near to Posta Office Owner : Devlopment Bank of Ethiopia Contractor: Birhan Tobiyaw Building Contractor Consultant : Ultimate Plan P.L.C Project information 4

Sections of the Company I Worked In 1 Site Work My responsibilities included observing and participating in various site activities. 2 Office Work I had the opportunity to gain insights into the administrative and documentation aspects of construction. 5

Materials Concrete Concrete is a key material used in reinforced concrete structures. Cement Cement serves as the binding agent in concrete, providing strength and durability. Aggregate Aggregates, such as sand and gravel, provide volume and strength to concrete. Water Water is essential for hydration of cement, facilitating the chemical reactions that lead to concrete hardening. Batching, mixing and placing of concrete spacer 6

Concrete Work Batching Precise measurement of concrete ingredients is crucial for consistent quality. Mixing Thorough mixing ensures a homogeneous concrete mix with uniform properties. Placing Concrete is carefully placed in the formwork, ensuring proper compaction and density. Compacting Vibrating the concrete removes air pockets and improves workability. Curing Curing involves maintaining moisture and temperature to allow for proper hydration and hardening. 7

Reinforcement Work 1 Cutting and Bending Reinforcement bars are cut and bent to the required shapes and sizes. 2 Placement Reinforcement bars are placed in the formwork according to the design drawings. 3 Stirrups Stirrups are used to reinforce the shear strength of concrete structures . 4 Lapping Lapping involves overlapping reinforcement bars to provide a continuous reinforcing element . 8

Formwork Temporary Mold Formwork serves as a temporary mold for concrete structures. Requirements Formwork must be strong, rigid, and capable of resisting the pressure of fresh concrete. 9

Scaffolding Temporary structure erected separately from structural support scaffolds. Provides easy circulation and working environment. Required for all types of structures constructed above ground level. Various stages of construction should be erected at convenient heights. Only limited loads should be put on the scaffolding. 10

Equipment Used Mobile Truck Mixer Used to transport and mix concrete . Concrete Pumper Truck Delivers concrete from the mixer to the desired location. Vibrator Used to remove air bubbles and consolidate concrete. 11

Man Power 1 Project Manager Overall project planning and execution. 2 Site Engineer Supervises construction activities on site. 3 Office Engineer Assists with drawings, calculations, and documentation. 4 Foreman Manages and supervises the labor crew. 12

Major site works (superstructure) Are activities performed above the ground level. Work task I have been executed 13

Elevation Column 1 Provide Cretcher A device to hold concrete while pouring. 2 Tie Spacer Ensures proper spacing and alignment of reinforcement bars. 3 Keep Formwork The mold for the concrete to set in. 4 Check Alignment Ensure the column is plumb and straight. 5 Cast Concrete Pouring concrete into the formwork. 6 Keep Stirrups Reinforcement bars that provide shear strength. 7 Tie Bars Connecting the column reinforcement to the foundation. 8 Remove Formwork Removing the formwork after the concrete has cured. 14

Shear Wall Tie Starter Bars Reinforcement bars that connect to the foundation. Provide Stirrups Reinforcement bars that provide shear strength. Put Spacers Maintain the correct distance between reinforcement bars. Keep Formwork The mold for the concrete to set in. Cast Concrete Pouring concrete into the formwork. 15

Beam Primary Beam Runs from column to column. Secondary Beam Runs from beam to beam through the slab. Distributes loads from the slab to the primary beams. Procedure Followed Erect Cristy Tie Formwork Keep +ve and -ve Bars Insert Spacer Check C/C of Stirrups Cast Concrete Carries the major load. 16

Staircase Formwork The mold for the concrete to set in. Reinforcement Steel bars that provide structural strength. 18

Office Work Takeoff Sheet A table format used to compute different amounts of materials. Material Ordering Ordering materials based on takeoff calculations. Cost Estimation Estimating construction costs based on material quantities and labor. Project Scheduling Planning and managing the project timeline. 19

Bar Schedule Explained A bar schedule is a table format used to calculate the total amount of reinforcement bar required for a certain structure. 20

Overall Internship Benefits 1 Practical Skill Improvement My internship provided me with practical experience in various construction tasks, enhancing my hands-on skills. 2 Theoretical Knowledge Upgrade I gained a deeper understanding of construction theory, applying classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios. 3 Communication Skills Enhancement I learned effective communication techniques, collaborating with team members and stakeholders. 4 Teamwork and Leadership Development I worked effectively as part of a team and had opportunities to lead and inspire others. 21

Key Internship Takeaways Task Execution I learned to execute given tasks efficiently and effectively, following industry best practices. Task Performance I gained the ability to perform tasks effectively, meeting project requirements and deadlines. Problem Solving I developed critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities, finding solutions to challenges on-site. Time and Task Management I learned to manage my time and prioritize tasks effectively, ensuring project completion within deadlines. 22

Recommendations for Improvement Company Recommendations Improve site worker safety by providing essential equipment like safety shoes. Ensure timely provision of necessary raw materials to avoid project delays. Invest in concrete vibrators to achieve optimal concrete compaction, preventing over-vibration or under-vibration. University Recommendations Extend the internship period to provide students with adequate time to acquire practical skills and knowledge. Establish a dedicated practice area within the university to supplement theoretical learning with hands-on experience. 23

Conclusion My internship at Birhan Tobiyaw Building Contractor provided me with valuable experience and skills. I am confident in my ability to contribute effectively to the construction industry. 24

The End Thank you for your time and consideration.
