Objective Of Pest Control There are three Objective Of Pest Control and we should achieve any one of these or all Prevention – In prevention objective of pest control we take preventive measure for stopping the growth of Pest . For eg Making the surroundings clean , dry or hygienically clean because pest like cockroaches grow in moist and near garbage. Suppression - In this objective the main goal is to reduce the number of pest to a certain level where the harm they cause is acceptable or damage is very minor. Usually Suppression and prevention are joint goal . Eradication – Eradication is done when the population of pest is out of control and in eradication whole population of pest is killed . Eradication is done when above two objectives are not followed or fulfilled .
Common Pest And Their Control Method 1.Bed Bugs Bed Bugs Are Tiny Parasitic creature that feed on the blood of humans and other animals . They cause irritation which cause los of sleep and energy. However they don’t cause any disease. Bed bug hide at daytime in bed, furniture, upholstery and feed at night by sucking blood from exposed human skin surface. Bed bugs are controlled by a process called Fumigation which is a method of pest control that completely fills an area with gaseous pesticides or fumigants to suffocate or poison the pests. Common Pest And Their Control Method 2.Beetles Their are many type of beetles like biscuit beetle, carpet beetle, and wood boring beetles. Most of the beetles are brown in colour and their size vary from 2mm to 5 mm. Biscuit beetles attack cereal products and make food poisonous . Biscuit beetles can be controlled by increasing the temperature of surface because the favourable temperature for this beetles is 19-24 C. Carpet beetles targets animal wool, leather, and cause irregular holes . For controlling carpet beetles vacuum cleaning of fluff and dust is essential and in case of infestation insecticide powder is sprayed on affected area. Furniture Beetles make their home in cervices and cracks of furniture made of unpolished wood for protecting furniture from furniture beetles wood should be treated with commercial anti-woodworm preservative ,polish or lacquer. To kill woodworm hidden in wood cervices the holes and cracks should be sprayed with proprietary wood worm killer. Pictures of Beetles Biscuit Beetle Carpet Beetle Furniture Beetle
Common Pest And Their Control Method 3.SilverFish These insects are silvery grey in colour and look like minute fish without fins. The size of these pest is about 1cm and are found in moist areas and feed on cellulosic material such as paper and cotton. To Prevent the growth of silverfish moist area should be cleaned and for killing them insecticides like pyrethrum and sodium fluoride are used . Picture Of Silverfish
Common Pest And Their Control Method 8 4.Cockroaches There are two common spices of cockroaches German and Oriental. The common size of cockroaches range between 20-24mm and oriental cockroache is little bigger in size . Oriental cockroach s dark brown in colour and prefers a cooler, less humid climate environment while German one is yellowish brown in colour and prefers warm humid environment . For eradicating cockroaches proprietary cockroach killer are used and pest control experts are called if problem persists. Picture Of Cockroaches German Cockroaches Oriental Cockroaches
Common Pest And Their Control Method 9 5.Moths Moths comprise a group of insects related to butterflies, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. Most lepidopterans are moths, and there are thought to be approximately 160,000 species of moth. Moths attacks cloths, carpets and some also attack packed food . Cloth moth are small insects with wingspan of 10-20mm brownish colour . Cloth moth prefers natural fiber like wool, cotton over synthetic fiber. For controlling moth area should be vacuum cleaned and cloth friendly insecticide should be used. Moths attacking food stuff are flour moth example are Mediterranean and Indian meal moth these moth feed on grains, dried fruit, nuts etc. The best method of avoiding moth is stored food should be in a good sanitation, the area where food is prepared, eaten or stored should be cleaned regularly . Use of insecticides should be strictly avoided in food preparation and storage areas. Picture of Moths and moth killer Cloth Moth Indian Meal Moth
Common Pest And Their Control Method 10 6.Ants Ants generally attack in large number called as colonies of ant they attack in search of food especially sweet substances. To minimize the damage caused by ants the vulnerable areas must be emptied of food, and borax (repel ants) should be applied on the shelves. For destroying the nest of ants 2 tablespoonfuls of carbon bisulphide must be applied at entrance but carbon bisulphide is highly inflammable so extra care should be taken while applying it. Common Pest And Their Control Method 11 7. Termites Termites belongs to family of ants . They are also called as white ants because of their colour. Termites have caste system that consists of workers termites, soldiers and winged reproductive termites and one queen. Termites feed on cellulose so they attack wood products. For preventing the damage caused by termites wood treated with insecticide should be used and infested furniture should be treated with orthodichlorobenzene and oil should be applied to cover the open pores in furniture. Common Pest And Their Control Method 12 8. Flies Flies are most dangerous insect in term of health because they contaminate food which causes diseases like cholera, typhoid etc. For preventing the growth of flies the first step is to destroy the breeding ground before egg laying season .Possible breeding ground are near garbage, undisturbed open water source and near dustbins. For trapping flies a fly poison concocted of 3 tsp of formalin in 1 pint of milk with sugar added is used. However aerosol fly killer are also used to kill flies Picture of Flies
Common Pest And Their Control Method 13 9. Mosquitoes Mosquitoes are responsible for spreading deadly diseases like Malaria, filaria and yellow fever. The most effective way of stopping growth of mosquito is by stopping the breeding which can be attained by not allowing water to stagnate. Drains should be covered wand kerosene oil should be poured over it to prevent the growth of larva. Picture of Mosquito and mosquito killer
Common Pest And Their Control Method 14 10. Rat and Mice Rat and Mice are rodents, both of them are responsible for many diseases like food poisoning , infection, jaundice etc. Mice and rats can contaminate food stuff, worktop, utensils with their urine and fur. The most effective method of controlling mice and rats is poisoning by proprietary poisons , fumigating is also an effective way. Picture of Rat And Mice And Killer Rat Mice
Common Pest And Their Control Method 15 11. Lizard Lizard fall under reptiles section of animals. There are about 5500 spices if lizard. The lizard found in home or in hotels is house lizard and its scientific name is Hemidactylus frenatus For removing lizards the ideal method is Using natural insect killing balls that are made up of tobacco and coffee can kill or make lizards stay away from home or hotel Picture of Lizard and lizard replant
Methods Of Pest Control 16
Natural Method Of Pest Control 17 In Natural method pf pest control natural things help in controlling pest like Climate- Weather conditions like temperature, daytime, humidity affect pest. Rain ,drought can kill pest climate conditions slows down the rate of reproduction of pest. Natural Enemies- Natural enemies kill the pest. The best example of this is snake, snake kills rat or mice. Geographic Barriers- Feature like mountain ,river , sea and ocean restrict spread of pests. Food and water supply- Pest can also be killed by stopping the supply of food and water because all pest survives on food and water. Shelter- Places to hide from predators are required for every pest so if shelter is destroyed the pest will either be killed y enemy or by climatic condition .
Applied control Method of Pest Control 18 Continued on Next page Artificial method are used in hotels for controlling pest because natural methods cant be used inside the hotel There are many methods used some of them are Host Resistance- In this method some plants, animals and structures have pest replant properties them and if same material is used for making products like furniture , upholstery the populations of pest will remain below harmful level. Biological Control- In this method natural enemies like parasites, pathogens are introduced for pest control. Cultural Control- Cultural practices are sometimes used to reduce the number of pest that are attacking. Common example of culture control are crop rotation ,cultivating the soil , lightening diyas during festival like Diwali etc.
Applied control Method of Pest Control 19 Mechanical/ Physical control- IN this method devices like trap, screens, barriers, fences, nets, radition and electricity is used for controlling pest. In these devices pest is either trapped or killed. Sanitation- Good sanitation always prevent growth of pest . Cleaning, eliminating pest harbourage decontaminating equipment’s, material etc are few steps which can be done to avoid pest growth. Chemical Control- In chemical control of pest control pesticides are used for killing the pests. Pesticides ae fastest and most commonly used method for controlling pest.
Avoiding the Harmful Effect of Pest Control 20 Read the precautions and instruction on the packaging especially those related to handling, storage and disposal. Never exceed the concentration ad dose rate above recommended level. Store chemicals away from food, children’s, pet. Always wear rubber gloves and face mask while handling and applying chemicals and rinse hand properly with water. Never dispose waste or remaining chemicals in sinks drains or toilets as it will pollute nature
