What is Insufficiency ? It is the Inability of the organ to perform Its normal Function. Lack of physical power or capacity. Deficiency in amount, Force, power, competence, or fitness inadequacy.
Before studying Active and passive insufficiency, we need to know about: one joint muscle Two joint muscle multi joint muscle
One joint muscle: The muscle which remains at only one joint. it influence movement at only that particular joint. Example : vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, and vastus lateralis originate on the femur (thigh) and insert on the tibia, Thus making them single- joint muscles.
Two joint muscle: The muscle which generally cross two joints. It influence movement at both joints. Example: gastrocnemius muscle spanning over the knee and the ankle joint.
Multi joint muscle: The muscle which generally cross two or more joints. It influence movement at all the joint. Example: flexor digitorum profundus muscle.
Active Insufficiency of Rectus femoris :
Active Insufficiency of hamstring :
Active Insufficiency : The muscle cannot go for further shortening while performing the activity around the joints, which the muscle crosses. so, when the two joint or multi-joint muscle simultaneously contracts at all the joint it crosses, it creates active insufficiency. It occurs in the agonist muscle group.
Flexor compartments muscles of the Forearm. These muscles responsible for elbow flexion, MCP flexion PIP and DIP flexion . If the above said movements are done in the same sequence, the person feels difficult in flexing the MCP and finger after flexing the elbow and wrist, because the muscles are already shortened by the Elbow. So further shortening is difficult, this is called ac active insufficiency .
The muscle cannot lengthen further while performing movement around more than two joints, which it crosses. it occurs in the antagonist muscle group. The agonist muscle goes into active insufficiency. The antagonist muscle goes for the passive insufficiency. Passive insufficiency :
Extensor compartment muscles of the forearm. These muscles are responsible for elbow, wrist, MCP, PIP and DIP Extension. While performing the opposite movement around these joints in the given sequence, the muscle cannot go for futher more lengthening in the MCP, PIP and DIP. These phenomenon is called as passive insufficiency.
