LEARNING TARGET 1.Define and identify the different variables based on the formulated hypothesis 2. Differentiate dependent and independent variables 3. Show accuracy in identifying the dependent and independent variables in a given hypothesis
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE PICTURE?
WHAT IS MEANT BY VARIABLES VARIABLES – are measurable characteristics, factors, or parameters that can be modified or changed in the experiment. They influence the result of an experiment.
TYPES OF VARIABLES
IDENTIFYING VARIABLES
IDENTIFYING VARIABLES
LET’S TRY IDENTIFYING VARIABLES A student wanted to test how the mass of a paper airplane affected the distance it would fly. Paper clips were added before each test flight. As each paper clip was added, the plane was tested to determine how far it would fly. Independent variable: Dependent variable: Controlled variable: The mass of the plane The distance flown The same plane was used for each trial.
APPLICATION Describe the following: Independent or manipulated variables conditions that you manipulate or changed in the experiment Dependent or unmanipulated variables results of effects that resulted in the experiment Controlled or constant variables condition that you keep the same all througthout the experiment
ASSESSMENT: Specify the independent, dependent, and controlled variables on the following situation below. Experiment 1: Two groups of students were tested to compare their speed working with problems. Each group were given the same problems. One group used calculators and the other group computed without calculators. Independent Variable: ________________________________________________________ Dependent Variable: __________________________________________________________ Controlled Variable: ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Students with and without calculators Speed of working with problems The same problem
ASSESSMENT: Specify the independent, dependent, and controlled variables on the following situation below. Experiment 2: Mike wants to investigate if the amount of sunlight can affect the growth of the petchay plant. One petchay plant is exposed to the sun and the other one is covered. Independent Variable: _________________________________________ Dependent Variable: __________________________________________ Controlled Variable: ___________________________________________ Amount of sunlight Growth of petchay Petchay plant
ANSWER KEY EXPERIMENT 1: INDEPENDENT: Students with and without calculators DEPENDENT: Speed of working with problems CONTROLLED: The same problem EXPERIMENT 2: INDEPENDENT: Amount of sunlight DEPENDENT: Growth of petchay CONTROLLED: Petchay plant
