An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) is an instrument used to measure water current velocities over a range of depths. It's widely used in oceanography, hydrology, and environmental monitoring to assess water currents, wave activity, and even sediment transport in various aquatic environments. Here's how it works and how it's used for wave and current measurement:

How ADCP Works
ADCPs use the Doppler effect, which refers to the change in frequency of a wave relative to an observer moving relative to the source of the wave. The ADCP sends out sound pulses (usually in the range of 100 kHz to 2 MHz) into the water column. These sound waves bounce back to the ADCP after hitting particles or small organisms in the water, which are moving with the current.

Transducers: ADCPs typically have four transducers that emit sound pulses at slightly different angles. This allows the instrument to measure velocity in three dimensions (north-south, east-west, and vertical).
Doppler Shift: The returning echoes are shifted in frequency depending on the velocity of the particles moving with the current. By measuring this frequency shift (the Doppler shift), the ADCP can calculate the speed and direction of the water currents at different depths.

Measuring Water Currents
ADCPs can measure water currents at various depths by dividing the water column into layers, known as "bins." The ADCP measures the velocity of water in each bin, allowing for a detailed profile of current speeds and directions from the surface to the bottom.

Profiling Mode: This is typically used when the ADCP is mounted on a mooring or on the seabed. The instrument sends out sound waves at regular intervals and records the return signal to create a continuous profile of current velocities over time.

The HydroFlow series direct-reading Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler(ADCP) is an accurate and
easy to use current profiling system, which can be deployed on flexible platform: trimaran, UVS,
buoys and seafloor mounting and so on. Providing accurate measurement with 75m/25m range, the
HydroFlow 600/ 1200 can be widely used for monitoring and surveying discharge of rivers, canal,
offshore and other engineering projects.
