INTRODUCTION The students’ work experience program (SWEP) is a skill training program designed to provide students with practical exposure to real-world work environments. The SWEP program was first introduced in Nigeria in 1984. The aim was to expose Nigerian students to practical work experience in order to prepare them for the job market after graduation. The program was first implemented in selected universities in the country. Over the years, the program has expanded to cover all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It has also undergone several changes and modifications aimed at making it more effective. BENEFITS OF SWEP SWEP prepares students for the industrial work situation they are likely to meet after graduation; Usually the program helps bridge the gap between theory and practice, specifically in engineering it helps engineering students get exposed to machines and equipment, professional work methods, techniques in handling equipment and machinery that may not be available in their universities and ways of safeguarding the work areas and workers in industries. These programs help students apply classroom knowledge, build skills, and explore potential careers. They can also lead to networking opportunities and job offers after graduation. The students’ work experience program is a skill acquision program which is geared towards technical development of the student. It takes place within 12 weeks (3 months) at a stretch.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC MOTORS) is a large state owned automobile group, A subsidiary of CIG Motors, Focusing on the manufacturing of automobiles and motorcycles; And it covers both upstream industries (vehicle R&D and auto parts) and downstream industries (trade service, finance, insurance, leasing and logistics for automobiles). Headquartered in Guangzhou, Guangdong. Founded in 1954, Currently the fifth largest automobile manufacturer in China. They made their entry into the Nigerian automobile space in the year 2014. GAC Motors has 3 major branches in Lagos, Nigeria; focusing on Production, sales and maintenance or repair. Located at Ogba, Victoria Island & Ojota respectively. The production plant situated at Ogba focuses on the general production of semi-knock down automobiles which is where i chose to begin the crucial part of the work experience program before concluding at the Aftersales section located at Ojota, Lagos State. This section deals with the servicing, maintenance and repair of automobiles.

ASSEMBLY OF SEMI-KNOCKED DOWN (SKD) AUTOMOBILES What is a semi-knocked down vehicle? A knock-down kit is a collection of parts required to assemble a product. The parts are typically manufactured in one country or region, then exported to another country or region for final assembly. A semi-knocked-down automobile (SKD) is an automobile that has been partially assembled in the country of origin and exported whole to the destination market. The plant is divided into 3 zones, Plant A (SKD Assembly Unit), Plant B (Quality Workshop) and Storage/ Warehouse. Before assembly begins; Organizational staff from both plants are called to go over vehicle model process cards to ensure a thorough understanding of each assembly process to ascertain quality and reduce potential errors/defects Semi-Knocked-Down Automobiles Awaiting Assembly Plant B Plant A Storage Pie Chart showing Ogba plant production Functionality

ENGINE COUPLING, MOUNTING & INSTALLATION Overview: Car propulsion is provided by an engine or motor, usually an internal combustion engine. Heat engines, like the internal combustion engine burns fuel to create heat which is then used to do work. Specific to an automobile, an Internal combustion engine is a heat engine in that it converts energy from the heat of burning gasoline into mechanical work, or torque which is then applied to make the car move. The practical guide of an I nternal Combustion engine is the supply of air-fuel mixture is fed into the cylinder where compression occurs and then burnt through the spark plugs igniting it. This heat energy generated is then converted into mechanical work as the high gas pressure generated forces the piston to move along its stroke in the cylinder. To enable usage of the piston movement the driving thrust of the piston is transmitted by means of a connecting rod to a crankshaft which serves to convert linear piston motion in the cylinder to a rotational crankshaft movement. Procedure: During the assembly of Semi-knocked down (SKD) automobile the engines come in coupled albeit missing the steering rack The engine casing is then dismantled using an electric motor gun of socket size 10mm, 12/14 mm ring spanner, 17 mm ring spanner for central key bolt and the hooks are attached at both brackets at equal positions to maintain balance and to enable hoisting. PROJECT 1: ASSEMBLY OF SEMI-KNOCKED DOWN (SKD) AUTOMOBILES PROBLEM: A stabilizer Linkage connecting the sway bar to the suspension system

PROJECT 2: MAINTENANCE OF TRANSFER LIFTS AND INDUSTRIAL GENERATOR AT OGBA BRANCH AIR TRAPPED IN FUEL LINES: During servicing/maintenance of the plant industrial generator, The generator engine wouldn’t engage in sustainable combustion hereby providing power to the plant. This is due to the introduction of air into the fuel system which occurred during servicing (Oil filter change, Oil Change, Fuel Filter Change etc.) . Diagnosis & Solution : Air in the form of Air-bubbles passing through the fuel lines and injectors rather than fuel ; Solution rendered, was to bleed the system (Engine). This involves releasing air from the system through loosening of fuel connector fittings from each fuel injector while running the generator engine; until fuel can be seen leaking out of the connection before then tightening fittings back . Oil Filter Change During Servicing Of Industrial Generator

PROJECT 3 : SERVICING, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR AT OJOTA BRANCH FREE BRAKE PEDAL: During servicing, A vehicle was reported to have a free brake pedal this is due to lack of reliable pressure in the braking system caused by air in the brake lines. Diagnosis & Solution : Pressure loss in braking system caused by air in the system; Solution rendered was to bleed the brake system. This involves releasing air from the brakes. The simple procedure involves forcing of fluid through brake lines and out through a bleeder valve or bleeder screw. The fluid eliminates any air that may be in the system. Bleeder screws and valves are fastened to wheel cylinder or caliper. The bleeder must be cleaned. A drain hose is then connected from bleeder to glass jar where the fluid coming out from bleeder valve is collected. Bleeding involves repetition of procedure at each wheel to ensure complete bleeding. Meanwhile, one person should also be assigned to top up the fluid level in container over master cylinder to compensate for the fluid taken out through valves. If top up is not continued, then there are chances of air bubbles being developed in system which further delays the process.

CONCLUSION Following my Nine-week work experience program at Guangzhou Automobile Group, I have gained exposure of the different fault’s cars develop especially when proper maintenance and care are not taken as well as the various methods of solutions to tackle these problems, I possess a detailed understanding to a large extent the various processes involved in automobile assembly & production. During my 9 weeks training, I was also sensitized on the importance of safety rules and regulations in a workshop and that it should come first in any engineering environment. This training also gave me exposure to other skilled individuals in the engineering field.
